New Agreement Ends Clashes Between Syrian Army And Militants In Daraa’s Tafas

On August 13, clashes between the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and militants in the town of Tafas in the western Daraa countryside came to an end as a result of a new agreement between Syrian authorities and the local negotiation committee.

The clashes first broke out more than a week ago, when wanted militants in Tafas refused to honor a previous agreement with the government that call on them to leave the town. The militants fled the town a few days into the clashes. However, the situation in the town remained tense because the agreement was not fully implemented.

It’s worth noting that one the militants who were hiding in Tafas was none other than ISIS’s top leader in southern Syria, Abu Salem al-Iraqi. After fleeing the town, the prominent militant took shelter in the town of Adawan. Late on August 9, he was killed after being cornered in his hideout by a unit of former rebels that works for the government.

The new agreement will reportedly allow the SAA to enter Tafas. Army troops will have 72 hours to conduct search operations inside the town. The army will also establish a position next to the town’s hospital.

Government officials and Tafas negotiation committee are expected to meet on August 14 to finalize the new agreement.

The agreement represents a major success for Syrian authorities as it will expand the influence of the SAA in the western Daraa countryside. ISIS and other terrorist groups will not be able to operate in the region with much freedom as before.
