On September 30, an officer of the Egyptian Armed Forces (EAF) was killed in an attack by ISIS’s remaining cells in the Sinai Peninsula.
The terrorist attack targeted an EAF unit that was conducting a large-scale combing operation to the west of the city of Bir al-Abd. The officer was not the only victim of the attack. According to the London-based New Arab, several other service members were wounded.
The fallen officer has been identified as Captain Muhammad Yasser Yusef Hotch, from the 112th batch of the Egyptian Airborne Corps.
The EAF deployed several units of the elite Airborne Corps and the El-Sa’ka Forces in western Sinai following the May 7 ISIS attack on the Suze Canal water pumping station in Qantara. Eleven Egyptian service members were killed as a result of an attack, which was one of the deadliest against Egyptian government forces in recent years.
ISIS terrorists have been waging an insurgency against Egyptian government forces and pro-government tribesmen in Sinai for around eight years now.
The recent operations by the EAF forced ISIS cells in Sinai to tune down their attacks. However, the terrorists are still a real threat as proven by the recent deadly attack near Bir al-Abd.
