On October 8, a patrol of the Military Intelligence Directorate (MID) came under attack in the southern Syrian governorate of Daraa.
The patrol was reportedly attacked while it was passing on a road linking the al-Dahiyah district in Daraa city with the town of al-Yadudah, some seven kilometers to the northwest. Two military vehicles which were dispatched to support the patrol were also attacked.
The Horan Free League and other pro-opposition news source in Daraa alleged that five officers of the MID were killed in the attack. However, this is yet to be officially confirmed.
The well-planned ambush was one of the largest attacks to target Syrian government forces in Daraa in the last few months.
ISIS may have been behind the attack. The terrorist group recently lost three of its top leaders and several of its members in Daraa in operations carried out by the MID and other intelligence agencies.
Syrian intelligence officers killed seven terrorist of ISIS during a raid in the town of Jasim in the western Daraa countryside on September 23. Four other suspected members of the terrorist group were apprehended during a similar raid in the town of al-Musayfrah, also located in the western countryside of the governorate, on October 4.
Despite some slow improvement, the security situation in Daraa remains bad. More efforts are needed to secure and stabilize the governorate.
