On December 2, Russian defense manufacturer Uralvagonzavod announced that it had delivered a new batch of heavily upgraded T-72B3M battle tanks to Russian Ministry of Defense.
“The upgrade was carried out under the defense procurement plan that stipulates modernizing T-72B tanks to the T-72B3M level. The set of measures to upgrade T-72 tanks has been worked out by engineers-designers of the Ural Design Bureau of Transport Engineering. It involved practically all the systems and helped improve the vehicles’ maneuverability, raise their firepower and the protection level,” the press office of Uralvagonzavod said in a statement.
The company said that the upgraded battle tanks were quipped new automatic fire control system that raises fire accuracy, as well as with new 1,000 hp high-power engines.
The T-72B3M is the most recent upgrade of the T-72B, produced since 2016. The newly-delivered battle tanks were a part of a further upgrade that became known among arms experts as the T-72B3M obr.2022.
The most notable aspect of the new T-72B3 obr.2022 upgrade is the significantly improved protection. The sides and rare of both hull and turret were completely covered with Relikt new generation explosive reactive armour blocks.
Developed by NII Stali, Relikt uses a completely new composition of explosives to achieve dynamics protection. Unlike older reactive amours, it works equally reliably against both low-velocity and high-velocity missiles, doubling protection against shaped charges and increasing anti-tank guided missile protection by 50 percent.
The decision to further improve the protection of the T-72B3M was likely influenced by lessons learned during the ongoing Russian special military operation in Ukraine.
More details on the new T-72B3M obr.2022 upgrade could appear soon. The new heavily-armed battle tanks are suitable for the intense battlefield in Ukraine. However, it is unclear yet if they would be sent to support Russian troops on the frontlines there.

- Russian Defence Ministry Reported On Progress Of Military Operations In Ukraine On December 7, 2022
Tanks should be protected from attacks from above and below (like MRAPS). Also unmanned versions might be more valuable… Also heavy infantry and aerial cover is of paramount importance with such enemies as Ukronazy guerillas.
From above is a necessity now. Below: well, you can easily make a tank save against mines but it will increase it’s weight massively. Hence transport costs (especially by air), reduced operational range, repair costs, fuel costs, some operational applications become problematic.
slow ground targets in an era of missile wars vehicles infantry all of it
On the other hand Ukraine is leaking everything and the West think sending different air defence systems would make a change or would help Ukraine somehow.
Knowing how Military Incompetent the Russian Military are, I’m pretty sure the Russians will keep their new Military Tanks in Storage Instead of sending them to the Front lines in Ukraine, because I guess its the Russian thing to do the complete opposite of what makes Military Sense!
Incompetent… Tell me who’s killing their own???
That new tank smell… Pine and cordite fresh.
These new tanks clearly have NOT the defense against Javelins and NLAWs.
Note: As effective defense by Active Protection Systems cost cca 300 000 USD per tank, so for price of one oligarch’s yacht, ALL the frontline Russian tanks may have own APS.
But these have not. Where is systemics failure?
what happened with the Last batch?
