Late on August 2, an improvised-explosive device (IED) exploded in a Hummer SUV that was parked near the Iranian embassy in the Syrian capital of Damascus.
“At 10:05 am an explosion was heard in al-Mazzeh highway … Patrols of the Criminal Security Directorate and al-Mazzeh’s eastern Police center headed [to the area] … The inspection revealed that a Hummer vehicle exploded by an IED which had been placed on the left front wheel, causing material damage only,” a Syrian Facebook page affiliated with the Police force reported.
Syrian sources revealed that the SUV was owned by Ayham Assaf, a Palestinian businessman who is well-known for his pro-government views. According to the sources, Assaf was not inside the vehicle when the IED went off.
Following the explosion, Syrian security forces and the Military Intelligence Directorate (MID) deployed several units on al-Mazzeh highway, especially in the vicinity of the Iranian embassy.
No group has claimed responsibility for the failed assassination attempt, yet. However, ISIS cells and a militant group known as Saraya Kassion are known to be active inside Damascus.
