On June 2, a drone attack targeted a Turkish military base located in the outskirts of the town of Zaylkan in Bashiqa district in the northern Iraqi province of Nineveh.
According to the Iraqi Sabereen News channel on Telegram, the Turkish base was targeted with a number of drones and a salvo of rockets.
The UAE-based al-Arabiya AlHadath confirmed that several suicide drones had attacked the base. The news channel correspondent in Iraq said that at least two of the drones were shot down by the Turkish military.
This was the second attack on Zaylkan base in less than two weeks. On May 21, a shadowy group calling itself Ahrar Sinjar attacked the base with two suicide drones. The attack claimed the life of an Iraqi civilian contractor who worked as a cook in the base.
Ahrar Sinjar, which is reportedly made up of Kurds and backed by pro-Iranian factions, may have been behind the new drone attack on Zaylkan base.
The recent attacks on the Turkish base were likely a response to Ankara’s ongoing military operation against the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in the Iraqi Kurdistan region. The operation, codenamed Operation Claw-Lock, was condemned by all sides in Iraq including pro-Iranian factions.
At least 21 Turkish service members have been killed by the PKK since the start of the operation. Despite this, Ankara appears to be determined to go on with its military plans.
