A unique sonar system capable of detecting enemy ships and submarines at a distance of hundreds of kilometers via a satellite network is developed by Russia, the Izvestia newspaper reported on this week.
“A state-of-the-art sonar system for protection of Russia’s territorial waters in the Arctic is already under development,” an unnamed Russian Defense Ministry source told the newspaper.
Developers will equip the system with sophisticated sonar buoys and underwater sensors that will make possible tracking of the acoustic signals of underwater and surface objects and transmission of the information to a ground control center via satellites.
According to the source, “the project is due to be finalized in 2017 and after it is approved by the Russian Defense Ministry, the new sonar system will enter service.” He also added that the fully deployed system will be able to cover an area spanning hundreds of square kilometers.
The Russian air defense manufacturer Almaz Antey became the developer of the project. The company cooperates with a whole array of enterprises of the Russian military-industrial complex.
