On November 19, a new oceangoing warship dubbed Abdollah Rudaki entered service with the Iranian Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Navy.
The warship joined the IRGC Navy’s fleet in a ceremony attended by IRGC Commander Major General Hossein Salami and other senior military officials.
The IRGC said the warship was designed to carry out combat, reconnaissance and logistical missions in oceans. The warship will be deployed to secure maritime routes, trade vessels and fishing boats of Iran and neighboring countries.
The warship, 150 meters in length and weighing 4,000 tons, is equipped with a 3-dimensional phased array radar and what appears to be eight Noor anti-ship cruise missiles.
Additional weapon systems, including the 3rd Khordad air-defense system, can be operated from the warship’s dock, which can host a helicopter. Several types of drones, like the Ababil-2, can be also launched from the dock.
IRGC Navy Commander Rear Admiral Ali Reza Tangsiri said Rudaki warship will be in a flotilla that will depart for the Indian Ocean.
The flotilla, that’s named after former Quds Force Commander Qassim Soleimani, will head to the northern part of the Indian Ocean to monitor marine, subsurface and aerial data as well as to practice asymmetrical warfare tactics.
“The naval flotilla has focused on the security of navigation in north of the Indian Ocean and action against branded and non-branded pirates, and will carry out operations if necessary,” Tangsiri said, according to Tasnim News.
Iran has been boosting its military capabilities to face the ever increasing pressure from the U.S. and Israel. In the last two years, the Islamic country made significant achievements in the defense sector.

i believe it might run on crude instead of diesel but anyway this is kinda the asymmetric use of assets what a paramilitary force will do but its also not much different from turning civilian airliner into awacs or refueling planes

The construction quality is excellent and is a very large with with a displacement of 4000 tons or in a destroyer range. There are three Dena, Saba and Zereh class heavy frigates to be commissioned by Nowruz next year.

8 launchers or 8 missiles? Is it capable to ream launchers? What model of cruise missiles it carry? PS at my point, with such immense cargo bay it has to be able to care 50-80 missiles with ability to rearm the launchers. Anyway: drone carrier is cheaper than USA aircraft carriers but has excellent capabilities for force projection in the region.
It is a forward deployment platform for C3I as you have correctly concluded. And with 4000 plus tonnage has plenty for storage. A bigger command ship capable of a dozen helos is to be commissioned soon.
It has a detachment of Iranian marines on board, so I would not recommend that.

When I saw the photos it reminded me of the Toyota mounted with heavy machine guns or flak guns. And indeed it is a cargo ship with weapons added to it. Weapon systems on the cheap, quite ingenious and as you say kudos.

Indeed, it is a naval variant 412 with more powerful engines and humidity resistant air filters as the Persian Gulf and Indian Ocean tend to get very humid with dense air May-October. Iran has upgraded all its naval aviation to suit its unique requirements. Most of the heavy fleet is being relocated to blue water ports of Jask and Chah Bahar that have better infrastructure and very good AD systems. Bandar Abbas the old Qajar era port is still the naval fleet HQ, but not for long.
Second hand cargo ship gets a military paint job and transformed into a multi weapons systems and forces platform. Wow the flak cannon mounted on a Toyota truck concept has come a long way. What next?

NATO countries spend multi billions of tax payers money on resaearch programs on the next generation warships, which when they finally come our often have issues like lurching. Iran takes a cargo ship and packs it with radars, weapons systems and forces so convert it into a multi purpose mobile fighting plaftorm, making a mockery of the billions the west spends. OK not as good as a dedicated warship but at a fraction of the cost.
