Late on July 24, Syrian authorities and former rebels in Daraa al-Balad, the southern part of the city of Daraa, reached a new reconciliation agreement.

The new agreement, which is brockered by Russia, was reached following extensive talks that last for more than a month.

Under the agreement, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) will lift its siege on Daraa al-Balad which was imposed in mid-June. All roads leading to the area will be opened within three days, starting on July 25. Furthermore, the army will establish three permanent military positions inside Daraa al-Balad.

On the other side, former rebels will hand over a part of their personnel arms. Around 100 gunmen will also join the reconciliation process.

The agreement is supposed to improve security in Daraa city and surrounding areas. Everyone, former rebels and pro-government fighters alike, will be placed under the rule of law.

In spite of the new reconciliation agreement, military reinforcements continue to pour in Daraa. On July 25, several units of the SAA, including the elite units of the 4th Division, were deployed in the governorate’s center.

Daraa Police Chief, Brig. Gen. Dirar Dandel, told the Sama TV that reinforcements were deployed to help secure the governorate and implement the new agreement in Daraa al-Balad.

Reconciliation, an obvious substitution for defeat. An excellent result by the government.
