On July 19, a new rocket attack targeted the U.S. embassy in the Iraqi capital, Bagdad, according to the Xinhua News Agency.
A source in the Iraqi Interior Ministry told the Chinese agency that three “Katyusha” rockets landed near the embassy, in Bagdad’s Green Zone, a fortified area that hosts government buildings and foreign missions.
“There were no immediate reports on casualties,” Xinhua quoted the source as saying.
In the last few months, a series of attacks targeted the U.S. diplomatic mission in Baghdad and American troops in a number of Iraqi bases.
Recently, the U.S. military deployed a C-RAM [Counter-rocket, artillery and mortar] system to protect the Green Zone. It remains unclear if the system was able to intercept any of the rockets which targeted the U.S. embassy today.
Newly formed Iraqi Shiite armed group, such as Usbat al-Tha’ireen, threatened to target the U.S. embassy in Baghdadi on several occasions. One of these groups could be responsible for the new attack.
The U.S. military usually responds to any attack that result in casualties. Today’s attack didn’t result in any losses, thus no escalation is expected.
