On March 25, defense observer Obretix shared satellite images showing the aftermath of the recent Israeli strikes on Aleppo International Airport in northern Syria.

The strikes, which were launched by Israeli fighter jets from over the Mediterranean sea on March 22, damaged the airport’s main runway and several navigation equipment. However, the airport was able to resume operations on March 24.

Two regional intelligence sources told the Reuters news agency that the strikes also targeted an underground depot at the adjacent Nairab military airport. The sources claimed the depot was used to store missile systems which had been delivered by Iranian cargo flights.

The images shared by Obretix show heavy damage at an overground depot located some five kilometers to the northeast of the airport.

Aleppo International Airport has been a major channel for the flow of humanitarian aid into Syria since the devastating February 6 earthquake that claimed the lives of at least 6,000 people in the country and more than 50,000 others in neighboring Turkey.

The March 22 strikes were the second Israeli attack on the airport after the earthquake. On March 7, a series of strikes hit the airport, placing it out of service for three days.

The recent attacks on Syria were a part of an Israeli covert military campaign known as “the war-between-the-wars”. The campaign is meant to prevent Iran from establishing a permanent presence in the war-torn country as well as from shipping weapons to Hezbollah in Lebanon.
