Warplanes of the Libyan Air Force (LAF) carried out a series of airstrikes on military positions of the Government of National Accord (GNA) in the Libyan capital of Tripoli in the early hours of April 21.

Libyan sources said that the airstrikes targeted a large military camp of forces loyal to the GNA in the area of al-Sab’a south of the capital. The airstrikes led to the closer of the Mitiga International Airport.

Several videos of the airstrikes show what appears to be precision-guided missiles hitting GNA forces’ positions. The LAF is not known for operating any air-to-surface guided munitions.

Earlier this week, a spokesman for the Libyan National Army (LNA) said that that “friendly warplanes” are supporting the army’s advance towards Tripoli. However, he later claimed that he was referring to the LAF.

This new wave of airstrikes will likely allow the LNA to resume its advance towards Tripoli. In the last few days, the army failed to make any new gains due to the fierce resistance of pro-GNA militias.
