On March 20, a new wave of Russian airstrikes hit ISIS’s areas of influence in Syria’s central region, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR).
The London-based monitoring group said that two warplanes of the Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS) had targeted hideouts of the terrorist group’s cells located in the outskirts of the town of al-Sukhnah in the eastern countryside of Homs.
ISIS cells in central Syria stepped up their attacks on government forces and civilians since the beginning of March. A recent report by the SOHR revealed that the terrorists’ last attacks claimed the lives of 24 pro-government fighters and wounded at least 29 others.
The al-Quds Brigade, a Palestinian pro-Damascus armed group, announced on March 17 that five of its fighters were killed in the eastern Homs countryside. On March 19, two people were killed and three others were wounded when they stumbled upon a landmine in the eastern countryside of Hama.
Despite the ongoing special military operation in Ukraine, the VKS didn’t step down its operations against ISIS in central Syria. Recently, a video showing a Russian attack helicopter eliminating an entire group of terrorists in the region surfaced online.
While the terrorist group’s insurgency in the central region is still ongoing, the recent efforts of the VKS have for sure helped contain it.
