On October 11, a new wave of Russian airstrikes hit the northwestern Syrian region of Greater Idlib where several terrorist groups are present and active.
Warplanes of the Russian Aerospace Forces targeted the outskirts of the towns of Qarqor and al-Za’aniyah in the northwestern Idlib countryside as well as Mount Turkmen in the northern countryside of Lattakia. The exact results of the airstrikes are yet to be revealed.
Al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the de-facto ruler of Greater Idlib, maintains a networks of positions in these areas.
The Russian airstrikes were most likely a response to recent violations of the ceasefire in Greater Idlib, which was brokered by Russia and Turkey more than two years ago. HTS and its allies launched several attacks from the region over the past week.
This was the third wave of Russian airstrikes to hit Greater Idlib since the start of the month. On October 4, several airstrikes hit the town of Kobane, a known stronghold of HTS, in the northern Lattakia countryside. Later on October 7, airstrikes targeted training camps of HTS between the towns of Sheikh Bahar and Armanaz in the northern countryside of Idlib.
The recent Russian airstrikes on Greater Idlib are meant to deter HTS and enforce the ceasefire agreement. Despite all recent violations by HTS and its allies, the ceasefire will not apparently collapse any time soon.
