During a UN Security Council meeting on September 17, US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley accused Russia of working to undermine North Korea sunctions and de-facto assosciated Moscow with the assosination of Kim Jong Un’s half-brother, Kim Jong Nam, allegedly carried out by North Korea special services using VX agent.
“And it’s not just on the high seas that Russia is aiding sanctions evasion. When North Korea assassinated Kim Jong Nam with VX, a deadly nerve agent, the United States moved to strengthen UN controls on the flow of chemical and biological weapons technology of North Korea. Russia agreed with us in the Security Council but turned around and again blocked the sanctions committee from updating its 12 year-old sanctions list – a list that is critical to preventing the flow of dangerous weapons of mass destruction-related materials to North Korea,” Haley stated.
The US diplomat also blaimed Russia for alleged diplomatic support for North Korea’s ICBM program.
“When North Korea began developing ICBMs to target the United States and other nations with nuclear weapons, we tried to stop them. But even when it came to denying North Korea the means to deliver nuclear weapons, the Russians resisted enforcement of the sanctions,” she said.
It’s intersting to note that some Russian media outlets even claimed that the US directly accused Russia of assisting in assasination of Kim Jong Nam supplying the North with chemical agents. However, these claims are false. A full transcript of Haley’s statement can be found here.
