Two terrorists who participated in 1999 in an attack under the command of Shamil Basayev and Khattab on settlements in the Botlikh District of Russia’s Dagestan were detained by Russian security forces, the Federal Security Service reported.
“The Federal Security Service, in cooperation with the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Investigative Committee and with the military support of the Russian Guard, detained the natives of the Stavropol Territory Maylubaev Rasul, born in 1975, and Yakubov Zagir, born in 1977, who are participants in the armed attack in August 1999 as part of bandit formations Sh. Basaeva and E. Khattab to the settlements of the Botlikh region of the Republic of Dagestan,” the security agency said.
In 1999 Maylubaev and Yakubov took part in an attack on settlements in the Botlikh region of the Republic of Dagestan, and also fought against law enforcement officers and military personnel who defended the region. More than 280 military personnel, law enforcement officials and civilians were killed as a result of the terrorist attack. Over 800 people were injured.
Under the investigation of this attack, 28 terrorists were put on the federal and international wanted list, with more than 80 terrorists convicted and were sentenced for the last years. Seven terrorists, including the odious field commander Shamil Basayev, were eliminated by Russian special services and the army.
Ivestigators, with the operational support of the FSB and the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, continue to identify the participants in the attack who are hiding from law enforcement agencies.
