The Russian ship “Akademik Chersky”, which has been near the German island of Rügen for two months, will not be able to carry out work on the construction of the Nord Stream-2 pipeline until September.
According to Die Welt, the reason is cod spawning near the Danish island of Bornholm.
As the newspaper points out, because of spawning, any work in this part of the Baltic Sea is prohibited in July-August. Die Welt notes that when the spawning season ends in September, construction of Nord Stream 2 is likely to continue as there are no technical obstacles left before it.
Furthermore, according to the outlet, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who came to Copenhagen this week for talks with Danish Foreign Minister Jeppe Kofod, was supposed to raise the topic of building Nord Stream 2.
There is no information if the discussion took place, or the cod spawning could be a direct result of the discussion and it could simply be “sabotage,” of sorts.
In early July, Denmark relaxed the requirements for ships that can complete the construction of Nord Stream 2. Copenhagen allowed the use of ships that hold position with anchors.
This allowed the Fortuna pipe-laying vessel to be dispatched to this region of the Baltic Sea. “Akademik Chersky” is equipped with a DPS system, which previously met Danish requirements.
On July 23rd, the US Senate, following the House of Representatives, approved the introduction of new sanctions against Nord Stream 2 into the Pentagon’s budget.
This refers to restrictions against companies that provide services for the assessment of insurance risks (underwriting) and insurance of ships, as well as for technological modernization and additional equipment.
As the press secretary of the president Dmitry Peskov noted, the Russian authorities are ready to develop a strategy to complete the construction of the gas pipeline if the US imposes new sanctions.
For this, however, to happen, the bill needs to be fully introduced so the full scope of the sanctions can be assessed.
For the Russians, the American sanctions are “illegal” and “pure protectionism”, as the Russian energy minister Alexander Nowak said in an interview with the “Handelsblatt”.
The United States wanted to force its liquid gas on Europe. Russian export monopolist Gazprom plans to complete the pipeline soon despite the U.S. threats, as announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin during German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s visit to Moscow in January.
