North Korea’s state TV on August 22 aired for the first time footage showing the Bulsae-4 non-line of sight (NLOS) anti-tank guided missile (ATGM) in action against Kiev forces during the battle of Kursk in Russia.
The Bulsae-4 was first spotted in Kursk last year, right after Kiev forces launched a surprise offensive there. However, the deployment of the system was not acknowledged by Russia or North Korea until now.
The system is typically mounted on the M-2010 6×6 wheeled armored vehicle, or a special military mini truck. However, the footage aired by Korean Central Television revealed that a version of the system based on a regular pickup truck was deployed in Kursk.
In footage, a missile fired from the system is seen shattering what appears to be a mine-resistant ambush protected vehicle of Kiev forces.
The ATGM features large x-shaped stabilizers designed to support top-attack profiles, allowing the missile to strike armored vehicles at their most vulnerable points. Its design is often compared to that of the Spike NLOS produced by Israel’s Rafael Advanced Defense Systems.
The missile is believed to have an effective range estimated between 10 to 25 kilometers. It utilizes an electro-optical seeker for guidance, combined with command guidance. This guidance system allows manual guidance through a video feed, or what is known as “man-in-the-loop” guidance. It is unclear, however, if the guidance is done via a radio link or an optical fiber cable.
It is unclear if the Russian has obtained the Bulsae-4. This would be bad news for Ukraine. The combination of long-range, modern guidance technology and robust mobility makes the system a significant threat to armored vehicles and are similar targets.
Kiev forces infiltrated Kursk early in August of last year. By last March, they had completely withdrawn from the region after suffering catastrophic human and material losses. North Korean troops contributed to the Russian-led counter-attack, conducting defensive and offensive operations. Their deployment was in the framework of a defensive pact with Russia.
