North Korea has tested a newly designed air defense missile system and conducted a separate long-range cruise missile strike drill against a simulated airport, state media reported on November 5, as Pyongyang continued a series of weapons tests focused on strengthening its ability to counter South Korean and United States forces.

The official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said the country’s Missile Administration conducted the air defense test a day earlier to verify the system’s technical performance, including its target detection and tracking capabilities.

The test also examined what the news agency described as the missile’s new materials and “intelligent multiple guided mode,” as well as the system’s ability to process detection information.

In a separate exercise on the same day, a unit of North Korea’s long-range strategic cruise missile force in the eastern part of the country launched a strike against a simulated airport target, KCNA said.

Images released alongside the report appeared to show the cruise missile dispersing cluster munitions over a runway, simulating an attack on an enemy air base. The weapon appeared designed to test how effectively its warhead could scatter submunitions across a target area.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said on November 4 that it had detected multiple missiles fired toward the East Sea from the Sondok area in South Hamgyong Province. The projectiles traveled less than 300 kilometers, while initial detection data suggested they could have included several different missile types.

The newly tested air defense system was first publicly unveiled in November 2025. Its design was compared to Russia’s S-400 and Israel’s David’s Sling air defense systems. Pyongyang has not yet disclosed the system’s technical specifications or confirmed any foreign assistance in its development.

The latest exercises marked North Korea’s fourth round of weapons tests in just over a week. The country previously tested a 600 mm multiple rocket launcher on October 29, a cluster munition warhead for tactical ballistic missiles on October 31, and a dispersal warhead for a strategic cruise missile on November 2.

The parallel tests appear to reflect an effort to strengthen two complementary capabilities: intercepting enemy warplanes with air defense systems and striking air bases and runways with cruise missiles before opposing forces can launch operations.
