A video purported to show a North Korean Bulsae-4 non-line of sight (NLOS) anti-tank guided missile (ATGM) in action somewhere in the Russian special military operation zone surfaced online on June 7.
The Bulsae-4 is mounted on the M-2010 6×6 wheeled armored vehicle, also made in North Korea. This launcher can accommodate up to eight missile containers.
The ATGM features large x-shaped stabilizers designed to support top-attack profiles, allowing the missile to strike armored vehicles at their most vulnerable points. In general, the design of the missile resembles that of the Israeli Spike NLOS.
The missile is believed to have an effective range estimated between 10 to 25 kilometers. It utilizes an electro-optical seeker for guidance, combined with command guidance via optical fiber cable. This guidance system allows manual guidance through a video link, or what is known as “man-in-the-loop” guidance.
The Bulsae-4 was first spotted in the Russian region of Kursk last year, right after Kiev forces launched a surprise offensive there.
It is still unclear, however, if the system spotted at the time was being operated by North Korean troops, who helped defend Kursk, or by the Russian military.
Several videos purported to show strikes with Bulsae-4 against Ukrainian military sites and equipment were posted to social networks in recent months. However, none of these videos have been verified yet.
The deployment of the Bulsae-4 in the special military operation zone is bad news for Kiev forces. The combination of modern guidance technology and robust mobility makes the system a significant threat to armored vehicles and are similar targets.
