Northeastern Syria: Rocket Attack Hit US Base After Coalition Strikes On Government-Held Areas (Photos)

On January 5, a rocket attack targeted the US Green Village military base in al-Omar oil fields in the southeastern countryside of Syria’s Deir Ezzor.

At least eight 122 mm rockets landed in the base and its vicinity. No casualties were reported. However, the Syrian al-Watan newspaper said that fire erupted at the base after the strike. Furthermore, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights confirmed that the base’ main helicopter landing pad was hit.

In a statement, the US-led coalition said that the attack was carried out by “Iran-supported malign actors”. The coalition refrained from making accusations in the past.

The coalition responded to the attack by firing six rounds of artillery towards the point of origin of the attack just outside of the government-held town of al-Mayadin in the southern Deir Ezzor countryside. Iranian-backed forces are known to present inside and around the town.

“The Coalition reserves the right to defend itself and partner forces against any threat, and will continue to do everything within its power to protect those forces,” coalition commander Maj. Gen. John W. Brennan, Jr. said.

Just a day earlier, the US-led coalition struck several launch sites for short-range rockets near al-Mayadin which were intended for attacks on the Green Village. The strikes against the launch sites were apparently conducted by US forces, but a statement issued by the coalition did not specify who carried them out.

The attack was likely carried out by Iranian-backed forces in Syria to honor the memory of Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, Deputy-Commander of the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Units, and Iranian Quds Force Commander Maj. Gen. Qassim Soleimani who were assassinated by the US around two years ago.

It’s worth mentioning that the attack on the Green Village coincided with a rocket strike that targeted the US Camp Victory military base near the international airport of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad

More attacks will likely target US-led coalition bases in northeastern Syria in the upcoming few weeks. Any response from the coalition may lead to even more escalation.

Its time to stop messing about and attck all those American convoys instead of just stopping them on the roads and its time to blast those bases off the map with ballistic missiles.
