Late on July 13, fighters of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) raided a post of Turkish-backed militants near the town of al-Trwaziyah in the northern countryside of Raqqa.
According to the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Turkish-backed militant was killed and four others were wounded as a result of the raid. The SDF sustained no losses during the raid, which was likely a response to recent Turkish attacks.
A few hours after the successful raid, clashes were reported in the outskirts of al-Trwaziyah which is held by the SDF.
Local sources said that the SDF had targeted four tankers which were smuggling oil from its areas to the Turkish-occupied town of al-Tufaha. A trafficker was killed and another was injured. The SDF seized all four tankers.
The SDF prevents locals from smuggling oil illegally produced from northeastern Syria fields to Turkish-occupied areas. The group maintains a monopoly over oil trafficking with Turkish-backed militants. Recently, RusVesan.SU shared aerial images proving this.
Turkish forces occupied a long strip of land between the town of Tell Abyad in northern Raqqa and the town of Ras al-Ain in northern al-Hasakah in October of 2019. Since then, the situation in northeastern Syria has been unstable.
