Russia’s Rubikon advanced unmanned technology center published on September 12 video footage showing a strike on a Ukrainian-made NOTA anti-drone electronic warfare system.
The system was targeted with a first-person view (FPV) suicide drone guided via fiber-optic cables. The strike took place in the direction of Sumy. Footage of the strike appears exactly 28 seconds into the video released by Rubikon, which also shows strikes on other equipment of Kiev forces.
NOTA was first introduced by Ukraine’s RADION LLC back in 2018. At the time, the company said that the electronic warfare system is designed to neutralize drones, disrupt mobile networks, from GSM to UMTS, LTE, CDMA, WiFi, and VHF, as well as to counter signal and radar intelligence systems.
The company also stated that the system provides direction finding sources of radio emission and radio jamming wireless communication, channels of satellite navigation, remote control, telemetry and technical intelligence means.
In practice, the system performed poorly. Since the start of the Russian special military operation in Ukraine more than three years ago, many NOTA systems have been destroyed with FPV suicide drones and loitering munitions.
The footage released by Rubikon was the second to show a Ukrainian NOTA system getting destroyed in just under 24 hours.
On September 11, video footage showing a strike on one such electronic warfare system in the direction of Donetsk surfaced online. The system was likely also targeted with a drone.
A quick search shows at least six other videos from earlier this year in which NOTA systems are seen destroyed by drones. While some of the drones appeared to use fiber-optic cables for guidance, which basically make them completely immune to jamming, others were equipped with a regular radio datalink that the electronic warfare system was supposed to jam.
Overall, the NOTA does not appear to be that effective, at least as an anti-drone system. Still, Ukraine continues to purchase more of the system.

the crime occurred in broad daylight, close to a public road, sparking widespread anger among residents and highlighting the escalating security chaos in the area.
the sources confirmed that the victim belongs to a poor, destitute family. as the sole breadwinner for her mother and disabled brother, the girl made the daily commute between her village, hawarat amurin, and the city of salhab to work in a sweets factory.
this daily routine made her an easy target. on wednesday, the day of the incident, she was intercepted by three armed men who stripped her of her clothes and sexually assaulted her, disregarding the presence of passersby. they then left her in a state of complete collapse on the road.

and took her to al-suqaylabiyah hospital. locals confirmed that the perpetrators of the crime belonged to a neighboring village, suggesting they may have monitored the victim for a long time before committing their crime.
rayan, a resident of the area, told euronews: “someone who commits such a crime in broad daylight is not afraid of anyone. these people openly carry weapons and act as if they are above the law.

a deteriorating security situation
the incident was not isolated. rather, it was part of a recurring series of security violations in the al-ghab area, where robberies, kidnappings, and armed attacks are common.
the week before the crime, engineer ali jaghili was shot while traveling on the same road. his money was stolen, before he miraculously escaped death.
residents of the area indicate that “the road linking hawarat amurin and salhab has become a daily scene of chaos,” in the absence of any effective role by the security authorities.
the authorities’ position
media outlets close to the current government were unable to deny the incident.
they confirmed the crime and announced that the relevant authorities had begun investigations to track down the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
the syrian observatory for human rights also confirmed the crime and called on the syrian authorities to open a transparent and urgent investigation into the incident and hold the perpetrators accountable without delay.

however, this announcement was unsuccessful. to calm the anger of the residents, who consider the “investigations” to be a routine for media consumption with each similar incident, without translating into real accountability or restoring lost security.
despite the brutality of the scene, local activists believe that the girl’s story represents a microcosm of the suffering of a broad segment of syrians today. the lack of security and safety, along with the ongoing cases of kidnapping and rape, are no longer limited to a specific region, but rather target residents of syrian provinces in general and members of the alawite sect in particular.
