On Friday, the MiG Russia’s aircraft corporation introduced its new MiG-35 fighter jet. The presentation was held in an industrial complex of the corporation in Lukhovitsy, located near Moscow, and was attended by military attaches and journalists from 30 countries.

Reportedly, the MiG-35 is supposed to replace the entire fleet of the Russia’s light combat aviation, as well as to become one of the main export models. By 2020, the Russian Aerospace Forces will receive 30 MiG-35s. In total, the Russian Defense Ministry is going to purchase about 170 fighter jets.

As commander of the Russian Aerospace Forces, Colonel General Viktor Bondarev, noted during the presentation, the creation of the MiG-35 is a real victory. The fighter jet is capable to conduct a supermanoeuverable battle, strike targets on land, in water and in the air.

According to chief designer of the the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) Sergei Korotkov, the onboard radar can simultaneously track up to 30 target at a distance of 160 kilometers. Thanks to engines with a thrust-vectoring module, the MiG-35 is capable to dodge enemy missiles and quickly occupy a favorable position for an attack. The modern electronics allow the fighter jet to use any types of prospective weapons, including laser weapons.

Guests of the presentation had a chance to see three MiG-35s in various stages of its assembly.

Exteriorly, the MiG-35 is similar to MiG-29K/KUB and MiG-29M/M2, but does not have a tailhook and folding wings.

The fighter jet has engines with increased traction, which were upgraded in order to reduce the smoke opacity.

170???

1 700 would be the normal number.

VGA

It seems they are buying some to help Migoyan out and get the production started, hoping that they will get some export customers. For their own airforce they are generally focusing more on producing some su-30 variants for multirole and the su-35 for air superiority.

In other words, Flanker derivatives will make up the backbone of the russian fighter airforce for decades to come, for better or worse.

i understand. but such big country needs large number of planes. and these migs are excellent for sacond line or forst line aganist not developed enemy.

Wasn’t the Mig-29 the first AWACs type of aircraft meant to patrol the Russian frontier? By that I mean that its electronics were very sophisticated and has network capability so that its RADAR could be used to direct air to air missiles from another aircraft. I would imagine that the Mig-35 has even more capability. The reason I bring this up is because the U.S. is constantly howling how this is somehow a revolutionary feature of the F35.

If the Russians find a way to actually network their radar, by that I mean combine RADAR from different aircraft into one image, that would be a potential counter to stealth aircraft. Multiple aircraft could see the same stealth Jet from multiple angles to increase its footprint. This would be an unpleasant surprise.

SnowCatzor

Nope, the MiG-29 was basically a Russian F-16 originally – a cheap, mass-produced point-defence A2A fighter. Like the F-16 & F-18 it has constantly evolved, and is now pretty much equivalent or better than an F-18 Super Hornet.

Later on, MiG will develop Russia’s counterpart to the ‘F-35’, minus the stupid VTOL requirements that compromised the latter’s development.

chris chuba

Yep, I got it confused with the Mig 31 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mikoyan_MiG-31 However, the point is that Russia has electronics that can network RADAR. The fact that people in the U.S. are hyping this as a revolutionary feature that justifies the F-35 is underwhelming.

Jesus

There are some good u tube presentations of MIG 31.

I like the looks of these aircraft. Just wondering what is the difference in price as compared to the F-35 and how many hours of maintenance for every hour flown must be a lot less than the F-35 which is huge advantage when it comes multiple sorties

Barba_Papa

Of course the F-35 is a completely new aircraft. The Mig-35 is a reworked Mig-29. Maybe a better comparison would be the most current versions of the F-16 and F/A-18. Didn’t Boeing recently come with a new super duper version of the Super Hornet?

Russell A Wilson

Agreed and I think the F-15 has brand new upgrades along with Super Hornet

Igor Ochocinszk

Bet that you can buy 10 MiGs for 1 F-35

VGA

These are very different aircraft for different roles.

Kirov

MiG 35’s nearest comparable Western counterpart is F-18

gmatch

Money spend on fighter jets is wasted – rockets, cruise missiles, drones are the way to go.

Solomon Krupacek

Poor Russia is not able to buy 1700 migs, only 10% of needed amount. :P

Denis Pol

Cool presentation. Very bright and impressive. I think that everyone who attended this event was delighted. It would be great if the author of the article with these photos using google slides design made a presentation for the Internet space. I’m sure you would have garnered tons of views and enthusiastic comments.
