One Of French Frigates Failed To Launch Cruise Missiles During April 14 Strike On Syria - Media

Launch of MdCN naval cruise missiles from a FREMM frigate in the Mediterranean.

According to the French newspaper L’Opinion, the French Navy faced unforeseen issues during the April 14 missile strike on Syria.

L’Opinion learned from own unnamed officials, the French Navy was planning to launch more than 3 MdCN naval cruise missiles on targets in Syria but something goes wrong because of a technical failure.

There were three frigates – l’Aquitaine, l’Auvergne and le Languedoc – equipped with MdCNs deployed in the eastern Mediterranean. However, only the Le Languedoc conducted a missile launch.

According to the report, the first warship failed to launch its missiles and a “reserve” warship had to conduct a missile launch. The third frigate was not also been able to fire missiles because the French Navy “missed the interval” set for the strike.

The April 14 strike was the first operational use of the MdCN naval cruise missiles and this “failure” wasn’t a great result for the French Navy.

On April 14, French forces launched 12 cruise missiles – 9 Storm Shadow/SCALP EG by Rafel and Mirage jets and 3 MdCN naval cruise missiles by the FREMM Frigate.

L’Opinion also noticed that it’s strange that the French Air Force did not launch the 10th Storm Shadow/SCALP EG missile.

John Whitehot

it also seems that one british submarine of the Astute class, was impeded to launch its cruise missiles after being intercepted and chased by russian submarines and frigates. Allegedly the british sub could not get to an acceptable launching position and had to abort its mission.

i hope the event would get a more detailed description on sf too, as it would be an interesting piece on modern asw operations, although the public tactical and technical details are probably scarce.

frankly

There are few things more intimidating in that world than being pinged by a sonar at short range. It will wake you out of a sound sleep with sore ears. Things more intimidating, being pinged by two or more, or at short interval and the expression torpedo in the water hastily shouted out can ruin your day. The ASW racket like submarine escape equipment are more for calming dependant nerves and selling useless equipment.

Sinbad2

You only hear the pings if you are below water level, and with the noise of the engine room you don’t hear them at all. Never come across a mess below the water line?

frankly

This story is about a submarine that could not shake a shadow, they do not ride around on the surface, well rarely. It’s sometimes used to express frustration during endless war games. It’s also used to discourage underwater divers, too close and it will boil gasses in their bodies. Fun way to go. You sound like you were on a surface ship and the subs were being polite. Or perhaps now a days they have reduced the power levels because of all the fish kill. Contrary to the movies the active Sonar in an actual war environment is not used as it totally gives away your location. However in this case, with more than one sub following them, perhaps one was harassing them with the sonar and the other just waiting if ordered to shoot. Of course having played a few war games they realize how vulnerable they are. Very nerve wracking. If for some reason, they can track you further out than vice versa you are just fucked unless your torpedoes are better. Way better. Now a days I would say if they start shooting everyone will have a torpedo they can’t shake following them. Damn things are smarter than the leaders ordering their use.

Sinbad2

A modern nuclear sub can outrun a normal torpedo, or at least go fast enough that the torpedo runs out of gas before contact. We used to drop 3 torpedo’s from choppers or planes, so no matter which way they turned they were cactus. Of course Russia has those supercavitating torpedoes that do 200 knots, so they can just use one.

John Whitehot

“A modern nuclear sub can outrun a normal torpedo”

technically, yes – although the sub would have to go flank speed ahead, which makes it so noisy that it would become an easy target for other platforms which it ‘ll find on its path (remember that asw is a team play involving subs, ships, helis and even planes).

in all likeness, a submarine that has been targeted by a torpedo becomes a mission kill – either it’s hit and disabled or sunk, or it would get out of the fight to survive.

countermeasures and acoustic decoys would probably be the subs best chances, although they are systems of which very little is reliably known.

frankly

Chuckling here. Not sure the point of this debate, in order to outrun a torpedo, the sub would have to be faster. So technically no. No one will buy, or build a torpedo that can’t catch a sub, when it’s sole mission is to, catch a sub. If they do then we have truly gone insane. Interestingly John you failed to mention the most dangerous and adept member of the team.

John Whitehot

“Not sure the point of this debate, in order to outrun a torpedo, the sub would have to be faster”

right. I should had included the part :”or at least go fast enough that the torpedo runs out of gas before contact”, which was giving sense to the above statement.

frankly

If you can say you have exercised in the, “tongue of the ocean”, or tell me the most powerful member of the ASW team you neglected to mention I might concede to finish it, otherwise lets move on.

A brand new sub outrunning a brand new torpedo is a long shot bet that I, for one, would not take based on personal experience, not something found in research or conjecture.

It seems likely to me that all participants in these games and stationed with equipment of all the branches are given an inflated view of their own capabilities and a deflated view of the oppositions capabilities. Given a realistic account of how things would play out I think all the actual participants from both sides would walk away and never come back! You could call that cowardly, I would call it smart.

John Whitehot

“A brand new sub outrunning a brand new torpedo is a long shot bet that I, for one, would not take based on personal experience, not something found in research or conjecture”

Ok, i corrected my post to include the other poster entire phrase so to stop you from going in this soliloquy anymore.

“If you can say you have exercised in the, “tongue of the ocean”, or tell me the most powerful member of the ASW team you neglected to mention I might concede to finish it, otherwise lets move on.”

You gotta be kidding. Or more likely, you sound a lot like Gramae something. In fact it’s you that keep neglecting to say what is the “most powerful member of the asw family”, which is an expression that may suit tabloid readers but not military analysis ones, who know that the relative importance of a determined asset is given by mission parameters and tactical considerations.

I’d expect that by now you should have released such precious, irrenounceable piece of information.

“It seems likely to me that all participants in these games …”

Not necessarily. As a deployed, in service officers I’d expect higher commands to give me information that is correct and pertinent to fulfill my tasks. In case that does not happen, and I fail my mission, I’d report on the uncorrectness of the orders and/or information received through the appropriate channels. And in the case I get “shut up”, or disciplined, the service I belong to will probably start having problems with a larger number of officers, because such things you know, can get out of hand pretty quickly.

frankly

Ok I made it worse. Outrun in my use implies not to be caught. The torpedoes we knew got terrific gas mileage. I think the other force I am talking about is behind the green doors, so to speak, and certainly classified. Lazy to research whether or not I can talk about it so I won’t. Haven’t been in the tongue, oh well.

You’d expect full disclosure eh? Kinda naïve. They can lie about 9/11 and you think they are gonna to give you all the demoralizing details of your futile but purposely, profitable mission.

It is hard to face that a significant part of your life’s work was an utterly futile waste of precious resource that profited and empowered the empire.

But it is not in vain if you can bear witness to that for the newer generations going down the same well traveled and misguided path. You gonna continue to glory in your ASW role, too bad. Did you ever hear about the helicopter that got torpedoed? Not fucking likely!

Did you ever get to work with the spooks? Oh the stories they could tell, stuck in the mud getting depth charged, yikes. Cold war indeed. Not that day.

Sinbad2

“flank speed ahead” You’ve watched too many movies.

John Whitehot

bullshit. it’s called flank speed for real, at least in us and uk.

frankly

Oh yeah, like I said the ASW racket. Honestly what we were told with a secret security clearance were probably lies as well. We could have an interesting chat over a few beers, but from my experience I won’t bet on surviving a torpedo shot at a sub from another sub. The war games we played with aviation assets had us hogtied in such a way that they could find us in the first place. That you would launch a torpedo, never mind 3, that might miss, goes to the weakness of the torpedoes not the speed of the subs. Why give you good torpedoes when you won’t ever find a target for them in real war? When we launched it was a kill from the point we had a FC solution.

The bottom line would be the only survivors of a hot war at sea would be the

John Whitehot

good stuff.

EL ZORRO

J. C is returning and oh boy! He is PISS.

frankly

Well if nothing else it’s certainly a test that we are failing miserably!

frankly

If it had gone hot those folks would be MIA. Just like our current batch of F.UK.US. leaders. Oh you can see them, but the performance of their jobs is neither legal or praiseworthy. Perhaps if they had spent a few days with Russian subs tailing them they might have a different outlook.

Kell McBanned

Mm interesting.

“According to the report, the first warship failed to launch its missiles and a “reserve” warship had to conduct a missile launch. The third frigate was not also been able to fire missiles because the French Navy “missed the interval” set for the strike.”

NATO in action. The boy-king strikes again. The French should stick to making Bouillabaisse

John Whitehot

It remains to be seen if these aren’t just excuses or the ships were interdicted by the russian navy in the same way of the UK submarine.

If they are actually releasing these kinds of details, there is a chance that they are doing it to cover for something they don’t want to admit in any form.

frankly

Agreed, in a hot war they maybe get two missiles off, assuming they ever get in range of their targets. In the Falklands the Brits fast attack showed up, broke a cruiser in half, all hands lost, with one round. The next day all the Argentine fleet had returned to port.

John Whitehot

“In the Falklands the Brits fast attack showed up, broke a cruiser in half”

The Belgrano was essentially murdered in cold blood as it was outside the “no-enter” area defined by the birtish.

The brits also don’t like to remind the number of ships they lost to argentine Exocet missiles, launched from low flying aircraft and land installations – 2 guided missile destroyers, 2 frigates and 1 transport ship full of gurkhas and an LST were sunk, the LST with free fall bombs.

but i’m digressing.

frankly

Agreed, my point was all the boys took their toys and went home. Rest assured they were happy to have made it too. Would there not have been more damage had a bunch of surplus bombs the US sold Argentine exploded. Faulty fuses, funny I remember that at all, that was the 80’s, no? There is a whole new topic. Selling arms to people that wind up using them on your allies!

Daniel Castro

French people are a disgrace… where is the anti-war movement?!

Bunch of hypocrites!

John Whitehot

they elected Macron. And the alternative was Lepen. Nuff Said.

The Latin Mass

Le Pen was a zionist, who slept with jews, literally. In the UK, they had the chance of anti-zionist Corbyn, but the Brits chose to hate Pakistani cab drivers instead of having a real leader like Corbyn.

Justin

Can u send me proof that Lepen was a Zionist lover! I never heard this and find it hard to believe! Dont ask me to look it up myself because I cant find jack shit about it! Link me!

There needs to be a nationalist uprising in the fake representative democracy of the United States, along with something similar for Britain, France, Germany, and Poland. With this in mind, they can take back the rest of Europe and the Americas from the globalist banker clique, their puppets and their cronies.

If the banksters of international Jewry call upon Russia, China and elsewhere to implement an international economic boycott on American and European made goods or even a third world war to reclaim lost lands, I think they would be sorely disappointed for the world would still trade with them and would want to avoid MAD whenever possible; that is if the latter is indeed more than a mere psychological weapon of terror that has lost its charm in terms of frightening the masses.

Of course by then it wouldn’t be too difficult to convince the rest of the world of the truth about the globalist conspiracy and their unholy god forsaken religion in particular. Perhaps that would lead to a third Cold War.

Kell McBanned

The Alt-Right are the only anti-war movement now, the Left are totally in la la land now in bed with the “you know who’s”.

Alberto Campos

Any anti-war movement in France would be a Soros financed one, like the current «anarchist» rebels (ZAD, zadistes), so as useless as my granny rifle. Furthermore, Whitehot, the alternative was not Le Pen but Fillon. Fortunately they didn’t push for the criminal CIA asset Sarkozy, kicked out the anti-sanctions Fillon and placed a puppet again (after the idiot Hollande).

Vitex

Couldn’t get it up.

Vitex

Wonder if some bits of electronic equipment were inexplicably not working out in the Mediterranean.

frankly

Another roaring success for F.UK.US. Unforeseen issues. If they have as much faith in their ASW capabilities as they do in the white he-devils, issues will be increasing. 2 ships in the navy, submarines and targets!

Durstigerhugo

Could be a cover story for something else. Maybe even mutiny? I wouldn’t want anyone to know that…

Hide Behind

4000 infantry and armor + ancillary groups of US military are freshly in Jordan. Obstensively they are there as part of exercises with NATO. SYRIAN, UAE and Jordanian military. There are already around 3000-5000+non Arab European, and Canadian, Australians in country. US does not like it’s military to look incompetant, France especially so, and Britain as well, all three nations within last century have massacred in revenge for being insulted. British in Africa, Kenya, paid their own and Ghurka Mercs 100 a head collected by them during that confict. The French were some of history’s most ruthless and barbaric nations of colonialism period. No need talk of US whose historical records are one bloody mass killings after another. This Syrian conflict may bloody well see a real upturn in destruction of all Syria’s infrastructure. IN Vietnam when US could not defeat Viet Cong they turned their “Tiger Forces” loose to torture, butcher, kill and main any Viet Nam in areas they called “Indian Country”. The head chopper jihadist, as so many of you call them, are but repeating tactics that F UK US has been doing for a very long while. Stay watchfull.

Interesting, I saw an ASW craft heading out a week or so ago on flightradar, was wondering what it was after.
