The Houthis announced on February 21 that the Yemeni Missile Force and Air Force had targeted oil facilities in the western Saudi city of Yanbu in a joint operation, dubbed Deterrent Balance 3.
In an official statement, Brig. Gen. Yahya Sari, a spokesman for the Yemeni group, said that twelve suicide unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) of the Samad-3 type, two Quds cruise missiles and a Zulfiqar ballistic missile were used in the attack.
According to Brig. Gen. Sari, the UAVs and missiles targeted a facility of Saudi oil giant Aramco as well as “sensitive targets” in Yanbu.
“This attack comes as a natural and legitimate response to the crimes of aggression, the latest of which was the crime of Al-Jawf, where dozens of civilians, mostly women and children, martyred,” the spokesman said.
More than 30 civilians were reportedly killed in a series of Saudi airstrikes the northern Yemeni province of al-Jawf last week. The coalition acknowledged the crime and said that the strikes were conducted during a search operation for the crew of a Saudi warplane that was shot down by the Houthis.
While the Houthis claim that Operation Deterrent Balance was a success, the Saudi-led coalition had announced that the attack on Yanbu was foiled. Saudi activists released videos confirming that some of the drones and missile were intercepted. However, explosions were also reported in the vicinity of the coastal city.
Deterrent Balance 3 is the most recent in a series of large-scale attacks by the Houthis on the Saudi oil sector. The first attack, Deterrent Balance 1, targeted the Shaybah super-giant oil field in southeast Saudi Arabia on August 17. Deterrent Balance 2 took place on September 14 and targeted two strategic oil facilities in the eastern Saudi areas of Buqayq and Khurais.

Better luck during Deterrent Balance 4, Houthis. Everyone will celebrate when Yanbu is in flames.
Yanbu is a huge Saudi oil storage, transportation and refining hub. Saudi Aramco / Mobile Refinery (SAMREF) is the largest facility there and the largest single-train refinery in the world (= vulnerable). Yanbu oil terminal/port (tank farm = 12 million barrels), the power plant and desalination plant are also strategic targets there.
Houthis used to either take out, spoof or jam Patriot radars with the drones before their cruise missiles or ballistic missiles got into SAM range. The U.S. must have figured out a way to make that ineffective this time or saw the Samad-3’s coming.
If Yanbu (SAMREF, actually) would have been hit, there would be at least a few videos of fires there. The Saudis would have flipped out. Saudis refine their own light crude there and export the products. It’s enormously profitable for them… for now. After the Houthi barbecue the refinery? Not so much.

IRAN UNVEILS LOITERING HUNTING DRONE
The previously undocumented type of missile now seen in Yemen are surface-to-air missiles (SAMs) that loiter in an area searching for a target, according to a US military official cited by the New York Times on 19 February.
The missile’s existence was revealed by a UN Panel of Experts report released earlier in February, which detailed the Forrest Sherman seizure. It said it included two examples of a “previously not-documented cruise missile, possible for surface-to-air use”.
It released photographs showing a missile with an electro-optical sensor and what appeared to be an optical proximity fuse that would be appropriate and deadly for engaging aircraft and helicopters. It has a solid-propellant booster that drops away after the air-breathing engine is brought up to speed. Together with its non-swept wings, this indicated it is a long-range subsonic weapon that would be ineffective against fast aircraft.
The military official told the New York Times that, after the booster drops off, the missile flies in a figure-of-eight pattern looking for targets and could be a threat to helicopters or V-22 Osprey, helicopters and tiltrotor transport aircraft used by occupation forces in Iraq and Syria. These new Iranian hunting drones can loiter over a wide area for hours at several thousand feet and hunt for potential targets and are relatively small and impossible to detect.
