Orban Declared Victory in the Referendum

Originally appeared at A-specto, translated by Borislav exclusively for SouthFront

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban declared victory on the referendum which took place Sunday, on the distribution quotas of EU migrants. Nearly 98 percent of voters, supported the appeal of the government to reject the EU plan. In order to be recognized as valid, the referendum requires a minimum of 50% voter turnout, but those who participated in it are only 43% of the eligible to vote.

A government spokesman said the results were “legally and politically” binding, but the opposition says that the government did not gather the necessary support. Viktor Orban urged the people who make decisions in the EU, to take into account the results and added that if necessary, there will be amendments made to the constitution. He recalled that on Sunday, more people voted than on the referendum on EU accession in 2003.

“I intend to reject the EU proposal for the distribution of migrants in Hungary” added the Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orban.
