On April 7, warplanes of the Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS) carried out 25 airstrikes on ISIS’s areas of influence in Syria’s central region, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR).

The airstrikes targeted hideouts of the terrorist group’s cells in the southern Raqqa countryside and the western countryside of Deir Ezzor.

Two days earlier, the London-based monitoring group reported that a series of more than 40 Russian airstrikes had hit ISIS cells in the southern Raqqa countryside, the eastern countryside of Homs and the western Deir Ezzor countryside.

According to the SOHR, VKS warplanes have carried out more than 130 airstrikes on ISIS’s cells and their hideouts in central Syria since the start of April.

The exact results of the recent Russian airstrikes on central Syria remain unknown. Yet, it is clear these airstrikes have forced ISIS cells in the region to lay low and halt much of their operations. Not a single attack by the terrorists was reported during the first week of April.

While the VKS’s operations have been mounting some serious pressure on ISIS cells in the central region, Syrian government forces still have to make more efforts on the ground. The terrorist group’s insurgency in the region will not likely end without effective air and ground operations.
