Over 130 people, including several police officers, died in a massive raid by Brazilian security forces aimed at organized crime in Rio de Janeiro on October 28.
Rio de Janeiro State Governor Cláudio Castro told reporters at a press conference that police confiscated a “large quantity of drugs” in the raid, according to Reuters. Authorities also claimed on social media that 81 people were arrested and at least 42 rifles were seized during the operation.
Castro went on to pronounce the raid “the biggest operation in the history of Rio de Janeiro” in a post to the X social network.
Separately, Rio de Janeiro’s government said that the police launched the operation to “combat the territorial expansion” of the Comando Vermelho criminal group.
The operation was in the works for over a year, the government said in a lengthy statement posted to X, and involved more than 2,500 military and civilian police personnel.
The huge police force engaged in the raid was bolstered by armored vehicles, helicopters and drones. The force exchanged fire for houses with gang members, who blocked key roads in and around Alemão and Penha favelas near Rio’s international airport, and used explosive-laden drones.
“This is the magnitude of the challenge we face,” Castro said in a post, before using a term popular among tough-on-crime leaders in the United States and Latin America. “It is no longer a common crime, it is narco-terrorism.”
Castro put the death toll from the raid at around 60 early on October 29. Later, however, Rio de Janeiro’s state public defender’s office said that 132 people were killed. The death toll includes at least four police officers.
Comando Vermelho, Portuguese for “Red Command,” is Brazil’s oldest and largest active criminal organization. In recent months, the Comando Vermelho has embarked on a major offensive to seize control of territories in western Rio de Janeiro controlled by paramilitary groups called militias.
Raids of this scale are common in Rio de Janeiro before international events. Next week, the city is set to host a major climate conference, the C40 World Mayors Summit.
