Over 2,000 Syrian Mercenaries Were Deployed On Nagorno-Karabakh Frontlines: Monitoring Group

At least 2,350 Syrian militants have been deployed by Turkey on Nagorno-Karabakh frontlines to support Azerbaijani forces, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported on October 28.

The London-Based monitoring group said a new batch of 300 Syrian militants was deployed in the disputed region in the last few days.

Syrian militants, working as mercenaries, has been supporting Azerbaijan’s attack on Armenian forces in Nagorno-Karabakh since the very beginning of the battle on September 27. The militants are being recruited and deployed by Turkey.

According to the SOHR, at least 217 Syrian militants has been killed by Armenia forces, thus far. 29 lost their lives this week. The bodies of 138 were transported to Syria, while the rest remain missing or are yet to be shipped back.

The SOHR noted in its report that many militants are now returning from Azerbaijani as a result of heavy losses, as well as religious differences. While the militants are all from the Sunni sect, the majority of Azerbaijan is Shiite.

“320 fighters returned after giving up everything, including their financial dues,” the report reads.

Syrian militants are reportedly being used as cannon fodder on Nagorno-Karabakh’s hottest frontlines. They are also suffering from shortage in supplies.

Tukey is using its Syrian proxies to further in its interests and inflame conflicts in other countries. Despite international pressure, Ankara will likely continue with this policy.
