More Turkish-backed Syrian militants have returned from Libya, where they fought for the Government of National Accord (GNA), according to a new report by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR).
The UK-based monitoring group revealed in its report, which was released on October 2, that more than 2,200 militants had returned to Syria in the last six days.
“The Syrian Observatory learned that a new batch of mercenaries, consisting of 800 fighters, returned to Syria after the end of their contracts in Libya,” the SOHR said in the report.
Turkey has deployed more than 18,000 Syrian militants, including 350 minors, in Libya since December of 2019. So far, 9,300 have returned.
Turkish-backed Syrian militants supported GNA forces, allowing them to repel a large-scale ground attack by the Libyan National Army on the capital, Tripoli. The militants also played an important role in the capture of many areas in Libya’s western and northwestern regions.
While more Syrian militants are returning from Libya, others are departing to Azerbaijan to fight as mercenaries against Armenian forces in Nagorno-Karabakh. Between 300 and 800 militants have reportedly made it to the battlefield in the disputed area.
