On December 11, more than 35 Russian and Syrian airstrikes targeted ISIS remnants in the central region, according to the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR).
The airstrikes hit ISIS terrorists and their hideouts in eastern Homs, eastern Hama and southern Raqqa.
The targeted regions are located around the Homs desert, between eastern Homs and western Deir Ezzor. The desert is the main stronghold of ISIS in the central region. Hundreds of terrorists are reportedly taking shelter there.
“The intensive airstrikes coincided with ongoing combing operations by Russian and regime ground troops in several sectors in the region,” the SOHR’ report reads.
ISIS terrorists launch attacks from the Homs desert on a regular basis. Most of the attacks are aimed at eastern Homs, eastern Hama, southern Raqqa and western Deir Ezzor.
On December 10, the terrorists killed nine Iranian-backed fighters in Deir Ezzor. A day later, two pro-government fighters from the Palestinian al-Quds Brigade were killed near the town of al-Sukhnah in eastern Homs.

The ongoing Syrian operation around the Homs desert has been allegedly inflicting heavy losses on ISIS. However, the terrorist group is not backing down. A large-scale ground operation deep within the Homs desert is likely needed to end the terrorist group’s presence in the central region.
