On August 19, at least 14 people were killed and 42 others were wounded as a result of a rocket attack that targeted the Turkish-occupied town of al-Bab in northern Syria.
A salvo of rockets struck a busy market in the town’s center just a few hours before Friday prayers. The rockets were allegedly launched from a strip of land to the southwest of the town, which is jointly held by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the Syrian Arab Army (SAA).
Al-Bab, one of the largest urban centers in the northern countryside of Aleppo, is the main stronghold of Turkish-backed militants in Syria.
The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights blamed the attack on the SAA, claiming that it was a response to the August 16 Turkish airstrikes on the town of Kobane in the northeastern countryside of Aleppo. Four Syrian soldiers were killed in the airstrikes.
Meanwhile, Syrian opposition and Turkish sources said that the deadly attack was carried out by the SDF. The Kurdish-led group denied responsibility. Nevertheless, just a few hours before the attack the group vowed to respond to a Turkish drone strike that targeted a teen rehabilitation center in the village of Szamuka in the northwestern countryside of al-Hasakah late on August 18. The drone strike killed four teenage girls and left 11 other people wounded.
The SDF and its affiliate, the Afrin Liberation Unit, carried out several rocket attacks on Turkish-occupied towns and villages in the northern Aleppo countryside over the last few years. Today’s attack on al-Bab was the most deadly this year.
The Turkish military and its proxies will likely respond to the rocket attack with brute force. Ankara could even use the attack as a casus belli for a new large-scale operation against the SDF in northern and northeastern Syria.

Peace would only come to Syria if everyone is gone from that place.
The U.S is trying its best to start a war between Turkey and Russia/Iran in Syria. That’s why they handed over parts of SDF areas to the SAA. America almost succeeded in igniting this war in February 2020 when 35 Turkish soldiers were killed in a Russian airstrike, which led to Turkey retaliating and killing many SAA Soldiers along with some Russian forces embedded with them. Both leaders de-escalated.
It’s impossible to think that Putin isn’t aware of this American plan. What beats me is why Putin plays along. By continuing to embed the SAA with SDF forces, Putin keeps the prospect of a Turkey vs. Russia conflict very possible. There are two ways Russia could handle this without clashing with Turkey.
First, Russia can forcibly disarm the SDF in those areas (which they already promised to do). Second, they can simply step aside and let Turkey clean up the mess America created (note that the SDF is also a problem for Assad and Russia). So, why is Putin still keeping the SDF? Most likely, because he is using them as a tool to pressure Turkey.
Putin is probably conditioning eliminating the SDF in these areas on Turkey’s withdrawal from Idlib, or as the Russians seem to put it, de-terrorizing Idlib. But here is where the problem lies. If Turkey were to agree to withdraw from Idlib, can Putin guarantee eliminating the SDF throughout Syria? No. It’s beyond Russia’s power to eliminate the SDF provided the U.S remains in Syria. The U.S will not leave Syria as long as Turkey or Iran stays. Since Putin cannot eliminate all the SDF/PKK in Syria, he simply cannot convince Erdogan to withdraw his forces.
The only option out of this deadlock would be a reconciliation between Assad and the opposition. This will solve the problem of Idlib and enable better cooperation between Turkey and Russia in Syria. This would be the best outcome for both and the worst outcome for America and Israel. But will Assad (actually Russia) make the necessary concessions? Maybe. Maybe not. Only time shall tell. But one thing seems certain: Putin is running out of time to reconcile Assad and the opposition. Maybe the Ukraine war will convince him to hurry things up. I hope so. The Syrians have suffered enough.
