On March 12, the Turkish Armed Forces (TAF) and the Free Syrian Army (FSA) captured the villages of Jamalah, Zindakan, Qila, Kumush Burj and Qibar from the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) in the Syrian area of Afrin. Thus, Turkey-led forces deployed within only 5km south of the YPG-held city of Afrin as well as 5 km west of the TAF’s positions east of the YPG-held city.

According to pro-Turkish sources, since the start of Ankara’s Operation Olive Branch, the TAF and the FSA have captured 193 locations including 5 towns, 155 villages, 33 mountains and hills.

On March 10 and March 11, Turkey-led forces made large gains in the area of Afrin and outflakned the city of Afrin from the northern and northeastern directions.
According to pro-Turkish sources, the TAF and the FSA will fully isolate the YPG-held city from the southern direction and cut it off from the government-held part of Aleppo province. When this is done, the YPG will have no more chances to receive any direct help from Damascus.

On March 12, the TAF’s general staff released a statement saying that 3,347 “terrorists” had been neutralized in the military operation. In turn, the media wing of the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces [the YPG is a core of the group] claimed that 95 members of the FSA and the TAF had been killed by the YPG in the Afrin area over the past 24 hours. The both sides provide little evidence to prove its claims about the alleged casualties.
if they divide the region in 2 ,as the SAA usually does all over SYria, then the YPG fighters are doomed. They will receive no mercy if they are captured.

I have to admit that the Turks are making better progress then expected. Either they’ve significantly upped their game since Operation Euphrates Shield, or without US air support the Kurds are just not as good as ISIS was.
Agreed, Turkey are just showing off now. Even from yesterday, the gains are extremely impressive. I have to admit I was extremely sceptical about their entry into this conflict, but after Erdy’s renewed commitment of coming in, sweeping up and getting out, rightly or wrongly I am all for it now.

All the times the US did support was by using false coordinates and they have been caught out by their allies for lying on this issue. This nonsense goes back decades so nothing new about the US and they need to clarify it’s only them so as not to get a report like the one the Aussies did.
The Kurds seemed to have decided to fall back on Afrin and make a last stand. If this site is to be beloved, then they are not even defending half of these towns. It seems like the Kurds are pulling most forces back and leaving a few troops to delay the enemy advance as long as possible (not doing that well). When the Turkish forces get to Afrin, 1 of 2 things s going to happen. 1, Afrin will fall within a few days and it will be easy. Or 2, Afrin will fall after weeks or months of urban combat and high casualties on both sides. If I had to guess, I would guess that option 2 of a prolonged and bloody fight is more likely. But yeah, over the next week or two the Kurds will continue to pull back and give up large chunks of land. If I were the kurds, from a military strategy standpoint, I would give up the whole region. Pull out, and save your troops to fight another day. Let Assad and Turkey figure out what to do with Afrin now.

The map is Turkish and not accurate. My information is that the forward positions of TSK/FSAT lead elements of Faylaq ash-Sham run roughly west of the line Sheikh abu Rahman – K’ankoork (junction of Route 217) – Tel Hemu – Quraya – Jalamah, the last occupied just 12 hours ago and is on the left (south) bank of the Afrin river. The city of Jandeeris was abandoned and fell without a fight. Why the YPG seems incapable or unwilling to mount a delaying defense is a mystery. We have known for at least a year that Afrin Kurds would be attacked yet it seems the YPG has failed to prepare. They are finished.
Where’s the YPG’s manpads? Turkey served them a helicopter on a silver platter.

i was watching an interesting video the other day where a turkish leopard was trying to kill 3 kurds with its main gun . Kurds anfortunetly are unequipped to face this battle , they will only stand a chance inside the towns but with afrin surrounded it will either be a slawter or a total serrender. personly i will be happy to see many many turkish soldiers dead..
The Russian Kornet AT missile sure brought the Israelis to find God in Lebanon in 2007. The Kurds did bring this on themselves, first by trusting us, and second to get out from under the Syrian umbrella.

Not surprised the TAF and its allies are making large strides now. I said months ago when there operations started it would take them a few weeks to capture strategic hill defencive sights, that happened to be correct. But when you get into the more open areas then the hardware factor becomes irreconcilable, whilst I strongly stand by infantry tactics against armoured units in built up and hilly terrain in the plains vehicles rain king. One huge problem I can see is when it comes to taking the provisional capital is there greatest asset is of little use, western media like to decry the suffering of ghouta and allepo however I think Afrin will be a true slaughter, especially when you know which SFA groups will storm the place!
This is the Afrin AREA that has been undertaken by Turkish forces not only the Afrin city..!
