On September 8, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) Tiger Forces, the SAA 5th Assault Corps, the Syrian Republican Guard (SRG), Liwa al-Quds and Hezbollah, backed up by the Russian Aerospace Forces, launched a new phase of the large-scale military operation against ISIS in the city of Deir Ezzor.

The advance was reportedly doubbed “Operation Assad Leap”. The declared goal of the opeartion was to break the ISIS siege on Deir Ezzor Airport located in southeastern Deir Ezzor.

Within the plan, government forces developed advaces on the ISIS-held area between the government-held part of the city and the airport from two directions: from the 137th Brigade Base and along the Sukhna-Deir Ezzor highway.

The SAA and the SRG achieved most notable gains in the highway area and secured the ash-Sholah village, the ash-Sholah oil field and reached the Maliha checkpoint.

Separately an intense fighting was ongoing between government troops and ISIS terrorists in the cemetery area east of the 137th Brigade Base where the Tiger Forces and their allies were attempting to secure the Talat Alloush hilltop.

Early on September 9, ISIS conducted limited counter-attacks against government near ash-Sholah and Talat Alloush but was not able to push the advancing govenrment forces back.

At the same time, according to pro-government sources, government troops fully secured Talat Alloush that overlooked the entire cemetery area.

If reports are confriemed, the SAA, the SRG and other pro-government formations will be able to use this strategic location and an advantage in fire power (deployed artillrey units and a Russian air support) in order to drive ISIS out from the entire cemetery area. In case of a success, this will allow to establish a land corridor to Deir Ezzor Airport and to provide supplies  and  reinforcements to its defenders. This will be a start of the ISIS collapse in the city.

Separately, the Syrian Defense Ministry announced that the SAA re-captured the Thayyem oil field from ISIS reaching the ISIS-held Turdah mountain from the south. The Turdah mountain overlooks the southern flank of Deir Ezzor Airport and is one of the key locations in the ISIS defense in the area.

Meanwhile, the US-led coalition and the Kurdish-dominated Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have decided to achieve own goals using the fierce battle between government forces and ISIS in Deir Ezzor city.

On September 8, the SDF advanced south of al-Shaddadah town and seized Tal Aljehev, Jabal az-Zirab, Bir Dumayni and Hujayf Zarrab from ISIS, according to pro-Kurdish sources. Most likely, the goal of this advance is to seize the Omar oil field, one of the largest oil fields in Syria, and as much area as its possible in the northern Deir Ezzor countryside while the SAA is battling ISIS inside Deir Ezzor city. According to Reuters, the SDF is set to formally declare the start of the operation on September 9.

On September 7, photos appeared showing a column of pontoon bridges and boats in the government-held area of Deir Ezzor. Some sources speculate that the SAA and its allies may use them to cross the Euphrates and to block the SDF advance.

The name of the operation translates as The LIONS Leap – Bashar didn’t do any jumping here…

Rob

Since 2011 Israeli and American troops fighting in between US backed terrorists against Syria. Israeli refugees in Palestine and America are the main terrorists in the world. They are the butchers who butchereds hundreds of thousands of innocent Syrians by terrorists and chemical attacks,

Maybe I was wrong about you, Rob.

well written overview, southfront …. it is sad to see while the true blue syrian army and her allies are fighting zio satanic terrorists courageously tooth and nail, evil opportunists led by the fake u.s. is taking the easiest and surest way to hell

Jens Holm

Rubbish irrelevant shit. This is not about closed down oilfields. Even if they were taken the situation isnt as descriebed.

You kind of think oil can be send out by ballons or Internet?

And before the uprise Assads took all the oil as if there was no “share” in their dictionary. You expect all are that.

SDF/kurds just want equal rights, npt stealing from others should go on.

Terra Cotta Woolpuller

Stop lying the Oil has always been held by the Syrian Nation to pay for all the services in the country you Marxist bumpkin. Truly you are naive how socialism really works stick to being a black block idiot in Antifa. The Oil companies from major western countries will show them how it is extracted on the cheap while they take 95% of the money. That deal is already in place to rob the Syrian people of their revenue , they don’t care if Kudistan is ever recognized since they already know it won’t happen.

There are too many major opponents against it for genociding the majority Arab population in the region. The Kurds have never wanted equal rights they just want more rights than the Native Arab population in the region. The Kurds have always stolen from others as they have been doing all along and it will end soon.

The Kurds are reconciling in Manbij and Afrin with Syria , other regions will soon start this process and the dream will be finished as they grasped for too much beyond what was reasonable. This always happens when greed is the primary motivator and the Kurds are definitely no exception in that regard.

Besides calling civilians soldiers doesn’t ring true when it is obvious they are not, Terrorism always gets exposed.

What is your point?

Terra Cotta Woolpuller

What is your comment about or do you wade into something without a valid comment.

Ronald

Without any doubt all these actions are necessary to free the city , but I want more . I want those bridges used , or helicopters , but I want SAA on both sides of the river , now .

Jens Holm

Do You have a teleporter??

Those troops has to regain some, but are many. As I feel it according to realism, they are not able. they can take Maadan or reduce it to the town. They might be possible to take the rest of Deir El Zor.

You are right in political matters, but I dont know if they somehow has traded by Russians and USA. I have written US says its a no fly zone for SyAF. But some troops could cross and being helped by USAF+France.

George King

Don’t need a teleport, the vertical envelopment has already been trained and exercised successfully by Syrian coalition. This is backed up by presence of Russian Special forces participation and any attack on them will be responded to as I refresh Putin’s words on this.

Zainab Ali

kick the illegal, unwelcomed, yankees out of syria asap

Operation Lion Leap would be a more accurate translation. On the other hand I don’t understand why airborne troops are not landed behind ISIS lines. It could be an effective move in order to block the SDF advance and to defeat ISIS.
