Overview of Military Situation in Aleppo City on October 11, 2016

On October 11, the Syrian army and its allies continued to conduct military operations in Aleppo with the most intense clashes were ongoing south of the Awijah neighborhood and in Sheikh Sa’eed where the army stormed the Sheikh Sa’eed Hill. The Syrian army , Hezbollah and other pro-government militias are implementing a long-standing approach aimed to retake from Jabhat Fatah al-Sham (formerly Jabhat al-Nusra) and its allies from Jaish al-Fatah small strategic areas across the city. This puts an additional pressure on the terrorists and allows the pro-government forces to keep the situation under their control without an all-in operations.

The Syrian government forces’ attempts to advance in the 1070 Apartment Project have not resulted in any success despite the PR claims of some pro-government sources.

The Syrian government has again announced that militants who lay down their weapons can safely leave eastern parts of Aleppo city. The announcement was disseminate by  the SANA news agency on October 10. Nonetheless, it’s unlikely that the militants in the city will use this opportunity untill their military situation becomes critical.

Meanwhile, some pro-government activists believe that the Syrian forces could contribute an additional attention to the Aleppo countryside instead of storming the city.

Clashes in the sourhern countryside of Aleppo:

We recall, on October 10, the joint forces of Jabhat Fatah al-Sham, Failaq al-Sham, Jabhat Ansar al-Din and a number of less-known militant groups announced on Monday a fresh military operation, called ‘Ashoura Battle’, in northern Latakia. The operation is set to be focused on the Syrian army’s positions in the Kurdish Mountains. The operation is most likely aimed to draw the Syrian military attention from the city of Aleppo and northern Hama where the militants’ defenses are collapsing under the pressure of the pro-government forces.
