Situation in the sky
On July 4–5, Ukrainian drones targeted multiple regions across Russia, with air defenses intercepting 94 UAVs over 15 areas.
After midnight, strikes damaged residential buildings in Engels and Saratov. In Cheboksary, drones hit an industrial facility, triggering a fire.

Ukrainian forces also targeted energy infrastructure in the Zaporizhzhia Region, leaving more than 20,000 residents without power.
Later in the day, Russian air defenses were active in Udmurtia.
In the DPR, at around 12:00 noon, Ukrainian forces attacked the Petrovsky district of Donetsk using shrapnel-type rockets fired from HIMARS MLRS. Four civilians were killed, and seven were injured.
After last night’s high-intensity strikes on Kiev, Russian forces continued today to launch attacks on the enemy’s rear areas. Ukrainian sources indicated the use of more than 100 Russian drones. Explosions were reported in Kiev and the Kiev Region, Starokostiantyniv (Khmelnytskyi Region), Chuhuiv (Kharkiv Region), Kremenchuk (Poltava Region), as well as in the Odesa, Mykolaiv, Cherkasy, and Khmelnytskyi regions.

Situation on the fronts
In the Kursk direction (the Tyotkino and Glushkovo frontline sectors), groups of Ukrainian infantries advanced from the area of Bessalovka toward the Russian settlement of Novyi Put. Their attacks were repelled. The majority of Ukrainian soldiers were eliminated; the rest fled toward Pavlovka.
In the Sumy direction, the evacuation of Ukrainian civilians from 213 border settlements continues. People are actively selling their properties but categorically refuse to rent them out to UAF personnel, prompting complaints from soldiers on social media. Meanwhile, local Ukrainian authorities and certain services have already left the region, leaving the population without a clear action plan or support.

In the Kharkiv direction, as a result of decisive actions, units of the Russian Northern group of forces liberated the village of Melovoye, located on the border between Belgorod and Kharkiv regions. The Russians advanced from the direction of Valuysky district, Belgorod region. The village itself is a typical border settlement situated on the right bank of the Kazinka river, stretching approximately 6 kilometers.
In addition to the settlement of Melovoye, Russian Armed Forces (RAF) took control of Saranchin Forest, Savkino Tract, and Afanasyev Forest, covering an area of up to 24 square kilometers.
Some Ukrainian experts suggest that Russian forces will move toward the village of Otradnoye in the Dvurechansky district of Kharkiv region—7 kilometers across open terrain—in order to outflank the Ukrainian Armed Forces (UAF) positioned at the fortified area in the settlement of Dvurechanskoye.
It also became known that Russian forces recently eliminated the Ukrainian “Shkval” battalion near Volchanskiye Khutora. Former convicts from this unit had become notorious for looting, murdering fellow soldiers, refusing to advance, and widespread desertion.

In the South Donetsk direction, the RAF continue expanding their area of control around Poddubnoye, successfully advancing northward toward the outskirts of Tolstoye. Russian troops captured enemy positions in wooded areas and on one of the heights on the southern approaches to the settlement of Karl Marks, which is now blocked from three sides. Additionally, the zone of control is expanding near Voskresenka.

In the Zaporizhzhia direction, positional fighting continues near Shcherbaky. Russian forces are conducting clearing operations in the northwestern part of Kamenskoye, pushing the front line northward. Northeast of Stepovoye, Russian units have strengthened their tactical positions. Significant combat and reconnaissance UAV activity has been observed in the area.
On the political front
The EU has allocated €2.8 billion for infrastructure projects, a significant portion of which has dual-use potential, including military purposes. Ukraine will receive part of these funds to improve railway routes and border-crossing points on its borders with Slovakia, Romania, and Moldova. Additionally, €76 million will be provided to build a European-standard railway line from Lviv to the Polish border (“Sknilov – Mostyska II”). Officially, these initiatives are presented as civilian projects, but in practice, they aim to facilitate NATO logistics and simplify military equipment transfers to the borders of Russia and Belarus.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the globe, Taiwan has established its first unit equipped with U.S.-made HIMARS multiple-launch rocket systems. This development is among the reasons the United States is revising its priorities and scaling back arms deliveries to Ukraine.
