April 23 was marked by new Russian precision strikes on Ukrainian military and industrial facilities in various rear regions, including in the capital. After several waves of night strikes, Russian missiles were also launched in the day time. After the air defense of the Armed Forces of Ukraine was depleted both in the rear regions and near the frontlines, Russian drones and missiles are effectively destroying their targets no matter when or where.
On the night of April 23, explosions thundered in Kiev, Mykolaiv, Kharkiv, Cherkasy, Odessa and Poltava regions.
Russian strikes were reported in the Ukrainian capital and on its outskirts. Explosions thundered in Kiev, as well as in the areas of Vasilkovo and Bila Tserkva. According to unconfirmed local reports, Russian strikes destroyed at least one launcher of an air defense system deployed south of the capital.
The southern Odessa region is pounded by Russian strikes on a daily basis. Russian drones and missiles are destroyed the port infrastructure and various military targets in the region, where the military equipment from NATO and other Kiev’s partners is coming by sea.
A series of large explosions thundered in the region last night, including in the port town of Chernomorsk (Illyichevsk). Footage from the region confirmed destruction of some infrastructure facilities used by the Ukrainian military.
The local sources claimed the destruction of another air defense systems. The type of the ADS was not revealed.
In the morning of April 23, the Russian Ministry of Defense published its daily briefing. For the first time, the Russian Defense Ministry announced the destruction of the US-made MIM-23 HAWK air defense missile launcher in Ukraine. Some military observers supposed that the MIM-23 HAWK system could be the target destroyed as a result of the night strikes in the Odessa region.
At night, a series of strikes targeted Ukrainian military facilities, including points of deployment of the Ukrainian military personnel, in the war-torn Kherson region.
A series of large explosions thundered in the city of Kharkiv. The local residents confirmed Russian strikes in the area of the local tractor plant. A large fire broke out in the hangars after detonation. Apparently, there was a hidden warehouse with ammunition of the Ukrainian army.
Russian precision strikes continued in the daytime.
At about midday, explosions first thundered in the city of Dnipro and Dnepropetrovsk region. Ukrainian air defense failed to repel the attack and smoke rose over the city as a result of the strikes.
Explosions also thundered in the city of Zaporozhie, which is under the control of the Ukrainian military.
The targets of the strikes are yet to be revealed, but the both cities host large industrial facilities that serve the needs of the Ukrainian military. The cities are also strategically important logistics hubs, where a lot of manpower and military equipment are accumulated.
In the afternoon, at least two Russian missiles struck targets in the city of Poltava. The exact targets of the strikes are yet to be revealed. Presumably, the targets could be some military bases or facilities used for accommodation of Ukrainian servicemen, NATO instructors and mercenaries.
Russian reconnaissance UAV spotted over the Odessa region:
The effectiveness of Russian strikes deep in Ukrainian rear areas has also increased thanks to the expansion of the range of Russian reconnaissance drones. Russian drones are are spotted more and more often operating over Ukrainian strategic facilities tens of kilometers from the front line. This became possible both due to the modernization of Russian aerial reconnaissance assets and the mastering of their operation by Russian military personnel, and due to the depletion of Ukrainian air defense, which can no longer repel Russian strikes and even detect reconnaissance drones that are coordinating these attacks.
