More than a dozen soldiers were killed in a suicide attack in northwestern Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on June 28.
According to Pakistani media, the deadly suicide attack took place in the area of Khadi Market in the North Waziristan district.
“A suicide bomber rammed an explosive-laden vehicle into a military convoy. The blast killed 13 soldiers, injured 10 army personnel and 19 civilians,” said a local government official in North Waziristan was quoted by several outlets as saying.
The attack was claimed by the Hafiz Gul Bahadur armed group, a faction of the Pakistan Taliban, more known by its acronym TPP.
Later, the Inter-Services Public Relations of Pakistan’s military issued a statement accusing neighboring India of planning and orchestrating the attack.
“In their desperation, an explosive-laden vehicle was rammed by the Indian sponsored kharijis into one of the vehicles of the leading group,” the military said.
It added: “Thirteen brave sons of [the] soil, embraced shahadat (martyrdom) [and] in this tragic and barbaric incident, two children and a woman [were also] severely injured.”
The military also said that the militants responsible for the attack “were pursued and after intense fire exchange, fourteen khwarij have been sent to hell by the security forces,” adding that “the operations in the area would continue and perpetrators of this heinous and cowardly act will be brought to justice.”
“The security forces of Pakistan in step with nation remain steadfast in their resolve to eradicate Indian sponsored terrorism from the country and such sacrifices of our brave soldiers and innocent civilians further reinforce our unwavering commitment of safeguarding our nation at all costs,” the military concluded.
The Pakistani accusation came amid high tensions with India. The April 22 attack on Pahalgam in Indian-administered Kashmir sparked a crisis between the two nuclear powers, with New Delhi blaming Islamabad for the attack.
The situation escalated on May 7 following deadly Indian retaliatory strikes against Pakistan. The two counties exchanged strikes across the Line of Control, the de-facto borders in the disputed region of Kashmir, and over the internationally-recognized border for the next three days. A ceasefire was announced on May 10.
Tension began to rise again on May 21, when Islamabad accused New Delhi or being behind a suicide bombing that targeted a school bus in the southwestern province of Balochista, killing at least five people.
