On June 18, the military wing of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, the al-Quds Brigades, announced the beginning of large-scale drills codenamed “The Resolute of The Faithful” in the Gaza Strip.
The al-Quds Brigades is the second largest armed faction in Gaza after the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of the Hamas Movement which is the de-facto ruler of the Palestinian enclave.

In a statement, Abu Hamzah, a spokesman for the al-Quds Brigades, said that the drills will last for several days and mimic different field operations. Many units of the al-Quds Brigades will take part in the drills, including the rocket and artillery force.
“This blessed effort comes within the framework of raising the combat readiness of our Mujahedeen, and our affirmation of the continuation of our long journey of resistance and accumulation until liberation and return, and God is the Guardian of the true believers,” the spokesman said.
The announcement came just hours after a series of Israeli strikes on Gaza. The strikes were a response to a rocket attack that targeted the nearby Israeli town of Ashkelon. The attack was likely carried out by the al-Quds Brigades in response to a recent Israeli security operation in the West Bank town of Jenin, during which three members of the faction’s Jenin Division were killed.
Unlike the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the al-Quds Brigades continue to receive support from Syria. To this day the faction is present in Damascus.
The al-Quds Brigades’ drills appear to be a message to Israel, which has killed at least 30 Palestinians in security and military operations since March 22. These operations were a response to a wave of attacks in the West Bank and inside Israel that claimed the lives of 19 people, mostly Israelis.
