The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) continues to face fierce resistance from the Hamas Movement and other Palestinian armed factions in the Gaza Strip.
On January 29, Hamas’ military wing, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, released video footage showing its fighters attacking Israeli main battle tanks and armored personnel carriers with rocket-propelled grenades to the west of the city of Khan Youns in southern Gaza. At least one vehicle was completely destroyed.
Two other videos which were released by the al-Quds Brigades, the military wing of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, on the same day show recent mortar attacks on several IDF gatherings in Khan Younis and the area of al-Sudaniyah in northern Gaza.
The recent attacks by Palestinian fighters resulted in more than material losses. The IDF acknowledged on January 30 that three reservists were killed in the Strip, a major from 14th Armored Brigade’s 87th Battalion, a captain from the 646th Brigade’s 6646th Patrol Battalion and a Warrant Officer from the 646th Brigade’s 6646th Patrol Battalion.
Their death has brought the number of Israeli troops killed in Gaza since the start of ground operations to 223. More than 1,200 others have been wounded so far, some of whom remain in a life threatening condition.
Recent losses have apparently forced the IDF to withdraw even more troops from the Strip, namely the 55th Reserve Brigade.
The IDF has been operating inside Gaza for more than three months. Despite occupying large parts of the Strip, it is yet to achieve any of its stated goals. Hamas is still heavily-armed and in charge and none of the Israeli hostages have been freed by forces so far.
