Palestinian fighters fired early on February 23 a salvo of six rockets from the Gaza Strip, a day after a deadly Israeli operation in the occupied West Bank.
Rocket sirens were sounded in the southern Israeli cities of Ashkelon and Sderot and other areas near the Gaza Strip. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said that five of the rockets were intercepted by the Iron Dome system and the last one landed in an open area.
There were no reports of casualties or material losses after the rocket attack. None of the armed factions in Gaza claimed responsibility.
A few hours after the attack, a series of Israeli strikes targeted Gaza. According to the IDF, the retaliatory strikes hit a weapons workshop of the Hamas Movement in central Gaza as well as an unspecified “military site” in the northern part of the strip used by the faction to store naval weapons. No losses were reported as a result of the strikes.
The rocket attack was apparently meant as a response to an IDF operation that took place in the West Bank city of Nablus on February 22 morning. Elevent Palestinians, including a child and an elderly man, were killed and more than a 100 others were wounded in the operation.
The IDF said troops had entered Nablus to arrest Hussam Isleem, a senior member of the Lion’s Den faction, who was allegedly the third member of a cell that killed an Israeli officer during a shooting attack in October. The other two were arrested last week.
After the deadly operation, Abu Obeida, spokesman for the military wing of Hamas issued a veiled threat, saying the faction, which rules Gaza, was “observing the enemy’s escalating crimes against our people in the occupied West Bank, and its patience is running out.”
Palestinian Islamic Jihad leader Ziyad Al-Nakhala also called the Israeli military operation in Nablus a “huge crime,” and vowed to respond.
In the last few months, Palestinian gunmen launched rockets from Gaza in response to Israeli operations in the West Bank and Jerusalem on multiple occasions. Still, the IDF is yet to slow down its operations in Palestinian areas.
