On May 22, militants operating in the town of Nahaj in the southern Syrian province of Daraa requested negotiations with the Syrian government, according to loca lsources.
Some pro-government media activists even speculated that Nahaj militants had already started to a reconsiliation process surrendering their weapons. However, this still has to be confirmed.
At the same time, reports appeared that militants operating in the settlement of Mahjeh in the same area are also ready for negotiations.
The both developments come amid reports that the Syrian military is redeploying its forces from the recently liberated Damascus countryside to southern Syria.
Earlier, General Suheil ‘the Tiger’ al-Hassan, a commander of the elite Tiger Forces, reportedly moved to southern Syria in order to manage and oversee the expected military operation in the area.
According to experts, at the first phase the Syrina military is going to contribute efforsts to rech a reconsiliation deal with armed groups controlling the southern part of Syria. However, if these efforts fail, the Syrian Arab Army and its allies will launch a military operation to defeat the militants and to force their leadership to return to the negotiation table.

Now things are going to get interesting. We already know the SAA and allies are fully capable of clearing jihadist pockets but Daraa will be different for a number of reasons. Most important is proximity to Israel and the occupied Golan Heights.
Israel is very sensitive to hostile troops close to her borders and has shown willingness to strike SAA and allied military targets to warn not to come to close. Obviously Assad is not heeding these warnings and the potential for a major confrontation will be high once operatons begin.
The other difference is that the jihadists are not isolated pockets and could draw on support from Israel for supplies, arms, medical care and of course bombardment by the IDF.
I am going to venture a guess that the quick move to liberate jihadist zones in Daraa could be motivated by the belief that Iran May soon come under direct attack. Clearing the jihadists will bring SAA, Hezbollah and Iranian military into contact with occupied Golan and the IDF. This gives a credible counter-threat against a move against Iran. As I said, how this unfolds will be interesting.
These developments need to be closely watched.
There is an entire, big, pocket to the east of Daraa that is away and buffered from the frontier with Israel. To SAA can take all this big pocket and encircle Daraa from the east and that is exactly what was reported they would do. Once Daraa is besieged from north and east and with ISIS threatening their western front, Daraa will have no option but to negotiate.

It will be interesting to see what happens during the first phase which makes sense – reduce the eastern finger (salient). Many possibilities in this opening phase of the Daraa operation:
Will the majority of jihadists negotiate or stand their ground or even reinforce? Will jihadists retreat to a more defensible southern position of the eastern finger? Will jihadists fight hard or half-heartedly? Will Israel and/or US provide indirect aid such as weapons, ammo, intel…? Will Israel and/or US provide direct aid such as artillery and air strikes? To what degree will jihadist actions be influenced by Israel/US support or lack thereof?
How this unfolds will be very telling.
I would assume that the first bit of the operation would be to re-secure the southern half of Daraa city, then its off to the countryside like a rampaging bull!
