According to official reports, the US currently has about 2,000 troops on the ground in Syria. These forces are involved in operations against ISIS and keeping the US influence in the war-torn country.
According to Syrian experts, the only real reason why the US wants to stay in Syria is to achieve own geopolitical goals in the region: to oppose the Damascus government, Iran, Hezbollah and Russia.

It is meant to keep up appearances. The long term trend is set; the US is on it’s way out of that region as the primary power broker. There are at least a few big reasons for this. America’s continued presence is a destabilizing factor in Syria and the neighboring regions. Throwing money after money despite deficits. Cultivating breeding ground for people who will one day hit back at America. Goodwill at negative in the region. Putting soldiers at risk. So much for America first. Only thing to show for it is it gets all opposition of the US empire down at the expense of blowback.
