On August 28, the Kurdish Peshmerga announced that it had foiled a rocket attack on the Khor Mor gas complex in the Iraqi Kurdistan region.

The complex, which is located in in the Chamchamal district of Sulaymaniyah province, is run by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) energy company Dana Gas.

In a brief statement, the Peshmerga said Unit 70 uncovered and seized three Katyusha [107 mm] rockets which were set up in the Qadir Karam subdistrict, directed at the Khor Mor.

The gas complex was attacked with rockets at least five times earlier this year. However, none of the attacks resulted in casualties or material loses. The attacks also failed to disturb the complex’s production, which currently stands at 452 million standard cubic feet of gas daily.

Pro-Iranian factions were blamed by some unofficial Iraq sources for the recent attacks on Khor Mor. The attacks were seen as a warning to the UAE.

Nevertheless, it is possible that the recent rocket attacks were the result of a power struggle between key political and economic players in Iraq. Ownership over the gas complex, who recorded a net profit of $111 million in the first half of 2022, is reportedly a matter of dispute between the Kurdistan Region and Baghdad.
