On July 20 , Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte visited Marawi City where fierce clashes were taking place between the Philippine Army and ISIS fighters.
Duterte announced that Marawi crisis is coming to an end soon:
“The fight in Marawi would soon be over. [The] one thing that’s stopping us now is ‘yung sa mosque, it’s a big one, it has underground tunnels but not so much about that.”
The president expressed his concern over more than 300 people still being held hostage by ISIS fighters in Marawi city and said he needed a martial law to secure the city during this crisis.
However Duterte assured that he could work without military law.
“If I have to arrest you without a warrant, I will arrest you without a warrant — with or without martial law — if I think that it is part of the war,” he said.
From its side, ISIS said that 3 Philippines soldiers were killed during clashes in the Balinj district of Marawi City and claimed that its snipers killed a fourth soldier in Marinot district in the city.
So far, 427 ISIS fighters have been killed in Marawi City and the Philippine Army has managed to capture 9 others. However, the battle doesn’t seem to be coming to an end soon, although it has been going on for nearly two months.

How did these ISIS insurgency manage to come to this place undetected with all this weaponry and manpower without being seen or questioned? Would it be easy for me to arrive in my row boat and set foot there?
That pretty much sums up the problem. There is over 20,000 miles of coastline! Who could watch all the fishing villages that exist. Plus there as been a local insurgencies fighting for years. If drugs can come into the Philippines then weapons could also come.
Doesn’t the US have military bases there? Seems strange they can detect every missile that North Korea Fires and there must be only certain places large ships can offload weapons and offload from a ship with cranes etc. I dont know but its not like a fishing boat coming to shore. The Philippine Navy is very poorly equipped and most of its ships are old and small patrol boats. Duterte has to change all this and fight the malinvestment of Government funds where the previous administartions of Benigno Aquino, Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and Erap were heading up totally corrupt regimes on behalf of the established Philippine Oligarchy through their “Port Barrel” schemes. The result is that all arms of the Philippine Military are obsolete and hopelessly underfunded. The Armed Forces prior ro Duterte’s Presidency have been very poorly paid and recompensed and are hence demotivated. This is now changing entirely due to Duterte. Soon, the Philippines will get modern and appropriate Russian and Chinese weapons, then matters may change!

There is no way the Philippines will part with any of the Philippine Islands to the Muslim’s. There are Muslim’s all over the Philippines so if you start giving parts of the country away where would you stop? Also, Mindanao forms 30% of the entire land area of the Philippines and is very rich in natural resources such as minerals, agri – products and pharmaceutical plant based drugs and tropical flora. Mindanao is a major producer of gold, copper, lead – zinc, tropical fruits, especially pineapples (Dole and Del Monte estates), durian, jackfruit, lanzones, mangosteen, marang and a lot more. Then there are the fisheries, coconuts for oil and copra and so on. The Muslim’s have to learn to integrate and accept Christianity as the majority religion of the Philippines and move forward form the 7th Century to the 21st Century. If they do not larn to do this conflict will be continuous and their society permanently impoverished rather than joining the rest of the country whose GDP is growing at an annualised rate of 7%. By the way Australia has very strong commercial and military ties with the Philippines – a much better relationship than the US has.

The difference with the Duterte Government is that in all previous administrations Mindanao was regarded as a rich fat cow to be plundered by the ruling Commercial Oligarchy in Manila. Duterte was born and raised in Davao and is a Mindanaoan and understands the importance of reconciling the age old differences between the Muslims and Christians to achieve a long term workable solution that will allow the Island to achieve its full economic potential for the benefit of all the inhabitants, not merely a collective greedy elite in Manila. The bulk of the Army support Duterte in his objectives as it then leaves them free to do their real job and not a continous nasty police action in the jungles of Mindanao where the advantage is with those creating ambushes and hit and run raids. Australia supports Duterte in achieving this positive outcome as Australia wishes to forge a long lasting commercial and military partnership with the Philippines which benefits both countries. Previous Presidents were either puppets / partners of the plundering Oligarchs in Manila or like the last President complacent and very weak. For example Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and her greedy family headed by Mike Arroyo and their nasty little son “Mikey” amassed a family fortune of well over US$ 1 billion in her tenure as President. the Marcos family’s family fortune is north of US$ 50 billion.

Definitely yes and this has been goig on for 15 years. They are landed from an RAN frigate or destroyer near General Santos City in southern Mindanao. They’re normally Australian SAS squads (4) or more rarely squadrons (16) established on the same lines as the related 22nd Regiment of the UK Special Air Service (SAS) and specialist commando’s from the RAN Marines that work closely with the Philippine Marines and Rangers.
Interesting ive always suspected we dabble down there a bit but if so its kept very very quiet here, we dont have Marines but do have Commandos and the grey boats of the RAN are frequent visitors to the region.
