ISIS cells in Syria have pledged allegiance to the new leader of the terrorist group Abu al-Hussein al-Husseini al-Qurashi.

The appointment of Abu al-Hussein as the new leader of ISIS was announced in an official audio message that was released on November 30. The leader succeeded Abu al-Hasan al-Hashimi al-Qurashi.

Amaq, ISIS’s main news agency, released on December 2 photos showing terrorists in different parts of Syria pledging allegiance to their new leader.

ISIS maintains a fairly large presence in Syria’s central region, where its cells have been waging an insurgency against government forces for around four years now.

The terrorist group is also present in the government-controlled southern region. Its former leader, Abu al-Hasan, was killed there in a joint security operation by government forces and former rebels in in mid-October.

Turkish-occupied areas in the northern region and the northwestern region of Greater Idlib, which is held by al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham, are the home to a large network of ISIS cells. Many of the terrorist group senior leaders were killed in U.S. raids and drone strikes on the two regions in the last few years.

ISIS is also present and active in the northeastern region where the U.S.-led coalition and its proxy, the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces, are in control. The terrorist group maintains an especially strong influence in the outskirts of Raqqa city and the southeastern Deir Ezzor countryside.

The terrorist group’s presence in Syria will not likely end any time soon. However, pressure from all the warring sides in the country is without a doubt making it harder for the group’s cells to operate as actively as before.
