The Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) announced on June 29 that it had carried out a series of drone strikes against Turkish military sites in the northern Iraqi autonomous region of Kurdistan.
In a statement, the Kurdish guerilla group said that 16 strikes targeted several sites to the west of the Zap area between June 6 and 25.
Turkish sites in Judi Hill were targeted once, the bases in the FM Hill twice and the sites in Amadiya Hill 13 times, according to the group.
“These operations resulted in the killing of at least 6 Turkish soldiers, and the destruction of many sites and tents of the Turkish occupation,” the PKK’s military wing, the People’s Defence Forces, said.
Footage released by the group showed several attacks with what appears to be locally-made fixed-wing FPV suicide drones. The footage were very shaky and some of the hits were not very accurate, which suggests that the drones lacked any stabilization or target acquisition systems.
The PKK attacked the Turkish military with drones on several occasions in the past. However, this is the first time the group has used this type of drones.
The PKK is designated as a terrorist group by Turkey. The group has been waging an insurgency against the country for around four decades.
In the last few years, the PKK boosted its military capabilities significantly. Earlier this year, the group revealed that it has accrued a new air defense system and released footage showing several Turkish combat drones being shot down over northern Iraq.
Some Arab and Turkish sources alleged that the PKK recivied anti-aircraft missiles and even suicide drones from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. However, there is still no official accusation from Ankara and no evidence backing these allegations.
Faced with the PKK’s growing threat, the Turkish military amassed a large force in northern Iraq and intensified strikes on the group’s strongholds there in recent weeks. Everything indicates that Ankara may be about to launch its largest military operation against the PKK in years.
