In the Zaporizhzhia sector, where drones are being used extensively, heavy fighting continues for control of the northern part of the Prymorske settlement. Meanwhile, Russian units have crossed the Haichur River and established control over the Bratske settlement. In the Kharkiv sector, the Russian “North” grouping advanced up to 750 meters on several sections near the Staritsa settlement and consolidated their position in a section of forest southeast of Liman. In the Krasnyi Liman sector, Russian assault groups advanced on the eastern approaches to Svyatohirsk and captured the Novoselivka railway station. In the Pokrovsk sector, units are conducting clearing operations in the northern part of Pokrovsk and expanding the control zone to the north, having established control over a farm and the surrounding area. In the area of the Udachne settlement, Ukrainian Armed Forces units have made several attempts at counterattacks, resulting in direct clashes near the local school. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that Germany is ready to provide security guarantees for Ukraine, including political, financial, and military contributions, even after a potential ceasefire.
Krasnyi Liman Sector
Although activity has decreased on most fronts due to deteriorating weather, there are reports of advances near Krasnyi Liman. The Russian army has once again reached the outskirts of Svyatohirsk. Footage of assault groups near the “Time-Out” beach on the eastern outskirts of the settlement emerged online. This movement apparently occurred during heavy snowfall, which limited drone operations.
The exact direction from which the units arrived has not been confirmed. They could have advanced either through the extensive forested areas along the Siverskyi Donets River banks or along the dirt roads connecting Svyatohirsk and the neighboring settlement of Yarovaya.
Meanwhile, the Russian army has taken control of the Novoselivka railway station east of Yarovaya; fighting in the area has continued for several months. Further north, there has been an advance on the Alexandrovka–Karpovka line, during which control of several strongpoints was established, and communication by road between the villages was cut off.
Despite the difficult weather conditions, there have been successful advances on several fronts in this sector, utilizing natural cover and forested areas.
Zaporizhzhia Sector
The capture of Bratske is reported on the northern flank of the Zaporizhzhia sector. Fighters from the Russian 36th Separate Motor Rifle Brigade of the 29th Army crossed the Haichur River at a new location and moved to the left bank. The non-flyable weather of recent days facilitated this advance. Advancing further north of Bratske could allow for the encirclement of the Pokrovske area from the west and the disruption of one of the supply routes.
The operational situation on the central section, on the Pryluky–Varvarka line, is unclear. Following a series of unsuccessful counterattacks, Ukrainian units have significantly reduced their activity in the area. Following failed attempts to advance toward Rivnopillia, the focus has shifted to counterattacks aimed at recapturing positions in the Huliaipole area.
Intense fighting continues in the northern part of the Prymorske settlement area. The Ukrainian command sends assault groups daily to respond to the fighting. These clashes are characterized by their complexity and the large-scale use of various types of unmanned aerial vehicles, including FPV drones, fixed-wing drones, and fiber-optic drones. According to data, the number of these drones in the sector may exceed 500 per day. The Ukrainian forces in the northern part of Prymorske are in close proximity to each other.
In the Stepnohirsk area, Russian units of the 7th Guards Air Assault Division have nearly finished clearing the territory. They are advancing north along tree lines and overcoming open terrain.
In the Lukyanivske area, Russian 328th Airborne Regiment (104th Airborne Division) and 11th Separate Guards Air Assault Brigade units are conducting offensive actions across open terrain. Fighting continues near Lukyanivske, Pavlivka, and Novoyakovlevka.
Pokrovsk Sector
Clearing operations in the northern part of Pokrovsk continue. Ukrainian units are attempting to take responsive actions in small groups to establish a foothold on the outskirts. North of the city, the expansion of the control zone continues. The Russian 27th Division has taken control of a farm north of Krasnoarmiisk and cleared an area from the northern outskirts of the city to the highway leading to Hryshyne.
Combat clashes continue on the eastern outskirts of the settlement of Hryshyne. The advance is complicated by regular counterattacks and the active use of drones.
In the Udachne area, Ukrainian assault groups regularly attempt to counterattack the northwestern outskirts of the village, and direct clashes have been reported near the school. The mine north of the village is under the control of Russian units.
Near the city of Myrnohrad, the northern outskirts are being cleared. There has been no significant advance, however separate groups have penetrated the defenses northwest of the city and are interacting with the grouping near Pokrovsk. In the city itself, individuals in civilian clothing are reportedly being identified who, upon inspection, turn out to be military personnel.
In the Rodynske area, the Ukrainian 15th Separate Special Purpose Brigade of the National Guard was struck by aviation in tree lines. Units of the Russian 9th Brigade advanced west of the city and captured several positions in tree lines.
Sumy Sector
The assault units of the “North” grouping of forces are advancing quickly in the Sumy region. Artillery and rocket launchers have delivered precision strikes on identified targets. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian army continues to regroup and replenish its assault and mechanized brigades.
The Ukrainian 1st Separate Tank Brigade has been withdrawn to rear areas for replenishment due to significant losses, except for one battalion transferred to the 71st Separate Air Mobile Brigade’s disposal. The question of changing the brigade commander is under consideration.
Advances were recorded on nine sections of the front in Sumy district and on four in Krasnopillia district. The total advance amounted to 700 meters.
There were no significant changes on the Tetkino and Hlushkivka sections. The “North” grouping’s artillery and drone units struck identified positions in the Iskriskivshchyna and Pavlivka areas.
Kharkiv Sector
In this sector, Russian troops continue to put pressure on the defenses in settlements and forested areas near Vovchansk. The “North” grouping’s artillery, thermobaric systems, and strike drones provide active support. Ukrainian units are holding their ground and amassing forces for counterattacks.
In the Staritsa area, advances were recorded on six fronts. Over the past day, they advanced up to 750 meters.
The Ukrainian command has replenished the “Shkval” assault battalions of the 72nd Separate Mechanized Brigade and the 127th Separate Tank Brigade with individuals who have criminal records. These individuals are expected to be used in counterattacks to regain lost positions in the Staritsa area.
The Russian army captured a position of the Ukrainian 57th Separate Motorized Infantry Battalion in the forest southeast of the Liman settlement and established control over a section of the forest. The total advance was up to 350 meters.
In the Volchanskie Khutora area, Russian assault groups advanced 300 meters south, capturing one strongpoint. In the Melovoye-Khatneye area, assault groups advanced on three fronts and established control over two tree lines.
Conclusion
As of January 8, advances have been noted in the Krasnyi Liman sector on the approaches to Svyatohirsk and in the capture of the Novoselivka station. Successes have also been noted on the Alexandrovka-Karpovka line. In the Zaporizhzhia sector, control of Bratske has been established, and heavy fighting continues in Prymorske, Stepnohirsk, and Lukyanivske, where drone usage is extremely high. In the Pokrovsk sector, the northern part of the city is being cleared, and fighting continues in Hryshyne and Udachne. In the Sumy sector, the “North” grouping has made steady advances on multiple fronts. In the Kharkiv sector, the offensive is developing in the Staritsa area and southeast of Liman.
The political context of events continues to evolve. Following a meeting in Paris, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that Germany is ready to provide security guarantees for Ukraine, including political, financial, and military contributions, even after a potential ceasefire. He did not rule out the possibility of deploying German forces on NATO territory adjacent to Ukraine. At the same time, he emphasized that a ceasefire is not currently on the agenda and called for increased pressure on Russia, counting on European solidarity.
