U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo warned from “devastating” results if Turkey launch any attack on northeastern Syria during a meeting with Turkey’s Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu on the sideline of the NATO Ministerial.
“Secretary Pompeo expressed support for ongoing negotiations regarding northeast Syria, while warning of the potentially devastating consequences of unilateral Turkish military action in the region,” a statement by the Secretary of State reads.
Turkey has been threatening to invade northeastern Syria for several months now. The strategic region is controlled by the US-led coalition and a Kurdish-led force, known as the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
Last month, the Turkish military established a command center in southeastern province of Sanliurfa that will manage any possible military operation in northeastern Syria. Ankara views the SDF as a threat to its national security and recognize some of its components, like the People’s Protection Units (YPG), as terrorist groups.
“We will definitely solve Syria issue on the field, if possible, and not on the table, as the first work after elections,” Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said during an election rally in Istanbul on March 30, few hours before the inauguration of the new command center.
Despite Turkey’s threats, the U.S. is not apparently backing down. Earlier this year, Washington revealed a new plan to keep 200 troops in northeastern Syria for the long term. The U.S. troops will be a part of a multination force that could establish a safe zone to protect the Kurdish-held areas.
Pompeo’s new warning will likely further escalate the tension between the U.S. and Turkey. The relationship between the two countries has never been worse in the recent years. Beside the disagreement over northeastern Syria, Washington is also trying to prevent Ankara from purchasing the advanced S-400 air defense system from Moscow.

Turkey procrastinating over attacking the Kurds has made it difficult now to successfully carry out the attempt. US strung Erdogan along with false promises which allowed them to arm the Kurds. Erdogan should make it up with Assad and then they both attack the Kurd/US.
I dont think Assad is ever going to trust or make peace with turks, that are from the main tools in what happen to his country as well occupy afrin and idlip.
Happen to agree with you but there is more at stake than the relationship between Erdogan and Assad. Apparently they used to be friends until Mrs. Assad was overheard to say that Erdogan’s wife is a pig. End of friendship.
That is gossip and not what fuel or motivate relations between nations. If Assad allies with the turks it means he lost for ever Afrin and Idlip and not only as the turks sights are set to the oil fields of syria and not because the kurds are there. But it is a long story and I am not that kin of writing long posts.

Russia’s allowance of Turkey in Syrian territorial matters has some special benefits when the friction between US and Turkey flare up over the Kurdish presence in North east Syria. Turkey as a third party, aside from Syria, Iran and Russia plays a counter move against US and the Zionist Kurds. Putin, on the chess board is using Turkey as a knight or a bishop to harass US interests in Syria, and drive a deeper wedge between the two.

I agree, Turkey is basically being thrown into the arms of the axis of resistance – arming and backing the Kurds was the worst move you can make unless your goal is to drive Turkey away, which in that case, it’s the perfect thing to do. The US has not abandoned it’s backing the Kurds despite vacillation and this has led to Turkey giving final warnings to the US. I think also the alliance is already in place and the Golan Heights is the Prize but that prize likely comes with the Samson Option – Israel will go down before giving up the Golan.
